    HI,

    On my web site I have a link that will start AIM on a PC and iChat  or Messages on a Mac.

    http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/ContactTesters.html

    There is a pic at the Top which is repeated at the Bottom which show an Available or Away pic.

    It will start the iChat App and you then send an AIM Message.

    The Message is prefilled in the link (As is the pic info)

    NOTE:- I have just found it will not work in Firefox 19.0.2  but will work  from Safari

    The HTML Code read like this.

    <a href="aim:goim?screenname=ralphjohnsr&amp;message=Hi+!,+I+came+from+your+website,+ralphjohnsuk.">

    <img align="right" src="http://big.oscar.aol.com/ralphjohnsr?on_url=http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk//images/ RalphOn.gif&amp;off_url=http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk//images/RalphOff.gif" alt="Webmaster iChat Online Status Indicator" border="0"></a>

    The whole thing is a Link (the <a href= at the start and the </a> at the end)

    It is essentially all one line but I added a line break here to keep it in the box.

    The aim:goim?screenname=yourscreenname will invoke the AIM app on  your computer.

    If the app happens to be iChat or Messages you may need to se the Applications Settings in the browser.

    The &amp;message= adds the following text (with the + as spaces)  to the message text field on the app.

    In this case "Hi ! I came from your Web Site, ralphhjohnsuk"

    The next bit is the long bit for On and Off line pics set in the Image tag (<img src="...... ) complete with with it's alternative text and taking the border Off

    <img align="right" src="http://big.oscar.aol.com/ralphjohnsr?on_url=http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk//images/ RalphOn.gif&amp;off_url=http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk//images/RalphOff.gif" alt="Webmaster iChat Online Status Indicator" border="0">

    It queries the AIM Server (big.oscar.aol.com) as to whether I am on Line and then display one or other of the pics as a result.

    In Messages it is adding the "Hi ! I came from your web Site...." with the + symbols as well.

    It is also not finding an AIM Name to send from and calling my AIM name either.

    Meaning if you just Send it sends to whoever has the current Front Chat.

    I just found myself sending it as an iMessage to myself.

    It seems I need to rebuild the page for newer browsers and newer version of iChat and Messages.

    Hi,

    4thanx.gif  for the points  1helpful.png

    When I created that page the HTML worked in most browsers that I tried at the time.

    Internet Explorer 5.2, Internet Explorer 6 for PCs, Safari at version 4 on both PCs and Macs, Firefox, Shiira and Opera 6.0

    It seems the processes within browser that make certain HTML commands launch app on your computer now need tweaking for this sort of thing.

    I am sure there are other ways as well.

    Some will need you and the other person to be able to "write" to the site that you have the page on (or be able to Create Chat pages  and write to those)

    This will have security issues and also data transfer rate issue that might play a factor.
