Does the latest Airport Extreme support 5g Wifi?

If it does, do you need a mac or macbook that also supports it or does it just deliver faster speeds and the mac can use that?

Thanks,

There are a number of devices from different manufacturers that will support 5 GHz. If the device that you are using supports 5 GHz...and....you are in close proximity to the AirPort Extreme, the device will likely connect at the faster 5 GHz speeds.

If you are asking if the latest generation Airport extreme includes 5GHz bands, then yes.  If you mean 5g WiFi, also known as 802.11ac, then no.

I know they're working on getting it out this year - not sure if the latest batch AE*s will require a simple firmware update or not.  Of course you're probably googling the same stuff I am about it.

802.11ad is just around the corner - 7 Gbps speeds!!

It will require a lot more than a simple firmware update. You are talking about major hardware changes here. I would not expect any current products to be "upgradeable" to 802.11ac.
