Make sure the mic hole is clear and unobstructed. It is the hole by the rear-camera lens.
Yse the Voice Memo to check to see if the mic works. It has a VU meter so y can see movement when sounds are mode.
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup. See:
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

When I reset it and then used the voice memo the vu meter went from 20 to 0 and that's it but when I record nothing happens, thanks though(: I guess I'll have to take it to an Apple store.
It has a couple of scratches but those are at least 2 or 3 months old and the mic hasn't work for a month maybe, you think the guarantee will be valid?.
