Q: Why does my ibook clamshell crash after booting off of cd?

I recently acquired an ibook g3 466 se with a DVD drive. Unfortunately, whenever I try to load OS 10 off of a cd or DVD, the system crashes. To test the hard drive, I installed ubuntu and that worked fine. So why doesn't it boot with os 10? Please help me!!

Which OSX do you try to load?
    10.1 / 10.2 / 10.3 / 10.4 ?

Have you got a black or grey install CD / DVD ?

Grey DVDs may not work with your iBook because they are connected with other machines.

Do you meet the system requirements ?

    128 MB RAM for OSX 10.3  / 256 MB for OSX 10.4

Installer program will not load if you have got a smaller amount of ram.

    Install CD/ DVD OK?

Severe scratches might be a problem.

I have tried OSX tiger and panther, and they are both retail black disks. I have maxed out the ram for the machine @ 512 mb. Both the CDs and DVDs look ok, and mine has the optional dvd drive. It sees the disk, but it will not load the OS off of it. Does it have to do with OS9 and having to have that? When booting in verbose mode, it says something about a missing serial conection with the rs232 port, and then firewire and crashes. Like I said, the ibook will run ubuntu fine, but I can't figure out why it will not run the original os it was meant for. Please Help!

    Thanks.

Maybe the previous owner has set an open firmware password that prevents that a new MacOS is loaded from the optical drive.

    Removing Password Protection

    1) Add or remove DIMMs to change the total amount of RAM in the computer.

    2) After pressing the Power Button the PRAM must be reset 3 times. (hold down Command + Option + P + R, wait until 3 chimes).

I tried that and now whenever I try to boot from the OS X cd it takes me into open firmware mode. What should I do know?
