Q: cannot pair my apple bt keyboard or trackpad with a mac mini for initial setup of mini

Hi,    I am trying to do an initial setup for a mac mini, using an apple BT keyboard and trackpad. When pairing the kb, it asks me to input an 8 digit code and hit return. Upon doing this, it comes back in 20 seconds or so and asks me again to input the same 8 digit code and hit return. How many times must I do this before it accepts the input?  Also when I setup the trackpad, the mouse cursor moves just fine, but tapping or press and hold....1 finger or 2.....nothing works as a 'click'.  What is the proper gesture to use as a 'click'?  Obviously, I cannot get past the initial screens in the setup process.  Is it NOT possible to setup the mini using a BT keyboard and trackpad?  I am so frustrated at this point, I am ready to take the whole shebang back to the store and tell them to shove it.  Any other advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.....just call me 'Stupid'

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8), I don't know what level of software

Curiously,  you have to get through setup before you are able to turn 'on' the tap to click feature of the trackpad in the system preferences.  I would love to hear Apple's reasoning for this.  How are you supposed to get past setup without this turned on?  So, it seems to me that it was the software that was 'stupid'.  Just my opinion....
