You don't need to reboot Windows.
Leave your iPhone connected to your PC then:
- Quit iTunes
- In task manager click "show processes from all users", sort by description and kill everything "Apple". Also kill the process with the image name AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe
- Click Start > Run > in the Open text box copy & paste the following - with the quotes - "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe" and press OK.
- Open iTunes

Jan 8, 2013 5:23 AM in response to Phillip Gutierrezby Malc_p,So, this problem has been discussed on here since September 2012 yet despite the almost daily new releases from Apple, they still haven't fixed it
Two points to make:
- If iTunes wasn't such a complete bag-of-spanners maybe it would be easier to fix.
- Maybe if the developers spent more time creating an application that was fit for purpose instead of trying to endlessly bolt on yet more unwanted and unnecessary bloatware, they might have something worth having.

Jan 12, 2013 6:00 AM in response to ReanimationXPby sandanjam,That didn't work for me and I've tried everything on every thread a few hours of tourture. I'm running Windows 7 64 Itunes 11.0.2.1 But you lead me to a new path which worked.
Close Itunes - Go to Task Manager - Services tab - select Apple Moble Device - click Services at the bottom - select Apple Mobile Device Manager - click stop on left side - wait a few seconds - click start - now open itunes - connect iphone and blam it recognized it!
Thanks for starting me down the path ReanimationXP!

Jan 21, 2013 1:08 AM in response to Phillip Gutierrezby ozsmacd,Cut and paste the following into notepad, save the file as itunesrestart.bat into your my documents folder.
When iTunes has this issue, just run the file by double clicking it.
@echo off
echo Time to kill the iTunes
taskkill /F /IM iTunes.exe
net stop "Apple Mobile Device"
net stop "iPod Service"
net start "Apple Mobile Device"
net start "iPod Service"

Jan 21, 2013 1:13 AM in response to ozsmacdby ozsmacd,I've had this exact issue since the very first day of using iTunes WIFI sync, it appears that Apple just don't care at all about the "it just works" mindset. These forums, and many others, are choked with this topic, only to have absolutley no fixes provided by Apple (I've contact support and also Genius bar without any success).
Apple, at least write software that provides some logging so we can figure something out for ourselves, or perhaps just write stable code that works.
Added to this is the commonly recognised iPhone5 WIFI throughput issues, also widely discussed & people are logging support cases/visiting genius bar......yet it's a continuing problem.
Starting to re-think iOS moving forward, whilst the walled garden is great when it works.......it soon becomes a prision when it doesn't.

Jan 25, 2013 2:22 PM in response to Phillip Gutierrezby WareLitchef,I rec'd this error code when I connected my iphone 4 to iTunes with a non-Apple cord. (I was travelling and had left my charger, etc. at home, found an "Apple Style" charge cube/cable at a gas station, and bought it for a few dollars.) It charged the phone fine, but would not sync w/ iTunes.
When I got home and used the original cable that came with my phone, there was no problem. -
Feb 4, 2013 5:33 PM in response to ozsmacdby ReanimationXP,Here's an improvement on ozsmacd's batch file that will fully cycle iTunes (even if it's running with devices connected), fix this issue, and tell you what it's doing in the process.
To use it, paste into notepad, pick File > Save As.
Change "save as type" to All Files, and then name the file "fixitunes.bat"This will only work on a 64-bit version of Windows. Tested on Windows 7 x64 and iTunes 11.01.
@echo off
echo -^> Killing iTunes and Services...
ping localhost -n 3 > nul
tskill itunes /a
net stop "Apple Mobile Device"
net stop "iPod Service"
echo -^> iTunes and Services stopped.
ping localhost -n 3 > nul
echo -^> Starting AppleMobileDeviceHelper...
AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe
ping localhost -n 3 > nul
echo -^> Starting AppleMobileDeviceService...
AppleMobileDeviceService.exe
ping localhost -n 3 > nul
echo -^> Starting iTunes...
ping localhost -n 3 > nul
