Q: nik collection plug-ins are causing aperture to crash. Please help!

Hi everyone, I am running Aperture 3.4.3 and a while back bought Nik Silver Effex 2.0.

A couple of days ago Google emailed me offering the complete Nik Collection for free.

I upgraded but since then everything has been messed up. The plug-ins all appear in aperture but when I try to load them they either fail to load or cause aperture to crash.

I have contacted Nik/Google but all of their suggestions so far have been to no avail.

Please help as I use silver effex professionally and have a job coming up soon that needs black and white edits!

I am desperate here so any help is appreciated.

    Hey guys,

still no joy. I needed to do some editing so I completely uninstalled the collection from my macbook and re-installed my physical copy of silver efex pro 2. Works perfect, unfortunately I have lost all my presets but at this point I consider this a victory.

Any idea if it possible to find the presets or will they have disappeared when I uninstalled the nik collection?

So the physical copy works with Mt. Lion, but not the collection. At least you got it going again, great.

The probably vanished, when you removed the presets from your library for testing - see this step on page 1 of this thread.

Do you still have the presets on your Desktop, that you removed, or did you trash them permanently?

If they are still on your Desktop, move them back to the folder

    ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture

    in your User Library.

Or restore them from your backup, if you trashed the presets.

I do not have a Blackberry phone, and no system, where the Blackberry Desktop is installed. So I cannot check, what it will install and where.

Kernel extensions will be installed in your System library:

Your Macintosh HD > System > Extensions.

Is there any file with "BB" in the name and the filename extension ".kext"? Then search the internet, if you can find out, if this file will be installed by Blackberry Desktop,

    Leonie,

    I found these

    RIMBBUSB.kext

    RIMBBVSP.kext

    Should I just trash these?

Yes, these extension look like installations by RIM Blackberry Desktop:

    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/Desktop-Software-for-Mac/Cannot-remove-BB LaunchAgent-from-system/td-p/1461045

I'd quit all running application, reboot, then move both files (RIMBBUSB.kext

    RIMBBVSP.kext) to the Trash.

Then kill the launch agents again:

Open a Terminal window and type:

    launchctl unload -w /Library/LaunchAgents/com.rim.BBAlbumArtCacher.plist

    launchctl unload -w /Library/LaunchAgents/com.rim.BBLaunchAgent.plist

That should remove the Launch agents, that I still see.

    Then reboot.

    Okay,

    removed the extensions.

Do I dare try to install the nik collection again?

    Anything else I should do?

I am very wary of doing this again.

Nik/Google got in touch and seemed annoyed that I was going to re-install silver efex from the disc, it worked though so I am not sure what to do now.

And did they give any helpful advice and information, besides being annoyed? Did they confirm, that the bundle is working with Mt. Lion?

If everything is running now, make a backup. The safest backup would be a bootable clone of your system (with carbon copy cloner, or super duper). When you have a backup, you could try to reinstall the Nik-bundle, but only if you really need them. Dave Stroh has done just that. After uninstaling with the included deinstaller and reinstalling the plug-ins worked, see:
