Airport Extreme and FileZilla FTP

I'm having trouble using FileZilla and I'm pretty sure it has something to do with my Airport Extreme. I have used FileZilla for years with no problems but about a week ago I can no longer connect to my server. I'm pretty sure I have it narrowed down to the router. I went round and round with my hosting company and it's not them. I disabled my Windows 7 firewall and still can't get in. I called the service department of my ISP and nothing is wrong on their end. I have a computer at work and I can get in through on that one but I can't using either my desktop or laptop at home. (both route through the router).

Is there anyone that can help me with suggestions or settings to get this resolved? I have a Airport Extreme 5th Gen using 7.6.3

I just went trough the same process, with hosting, ISP, etc. Narrowed it to the router as well (same setup as you, but on Mountain Lion).

Tech support from hosting company said their logs show that every time I try connecting, there is 5 FTP connections made, and since they allow only 4 at once on this account, I'm blocked. Weird thing is this happens on a perticular server only and only from my network. Other servers, even some from the same hosting company, when accessed from my netwok have no problem and there is no problem accesing this perticular server from outside my network.

Tried reverting to 7.6.1 and the problem was gone for a while, but I think it's just because the Airport reseted like you described.

Anyone knows about this multiple connections symptom?

By the way: Tried 3 different FTP softwares (Filezilla, Transmit and Flow) to the same result.

You would think someone from Apple Support would chime in with a solution to this problem after my first posting a month ago. I started searching for a new router yesterday. (anybody have any suggestions?) I'm getting pretty tired of reaching back and unpluging and repluging in this router. I used my FTP a lot.

I have the same issue.

I am no longer able to connect to my external FTP site (using FTP from the shell, or using Transmit). Something changed about 2 months ago, and now it just doesn't work.

Well, that's not quite true: if I reset the Airport (actually the Time Capsule) it works for a few minutes.

And if I connect via Ethernet directly to the cable modem (by-passing the Airport) that seems to work too.

I miss being able to just use FTP. :-(

p.s. I just bought a brand new 'stretched' Time Capsule, and it makes no difference. (It is a little faster though).

Try going back to 7.6.1 firmware. I have a pretty pessimistic view of Apple testing of this latest version.. and breaking port mapping is not the first time they have done that. Especially if it was working fine then stopped.

Do you happen to have BTMM and iCloud ID active in the TC or in a computer on the network that could be opening FTP ports and hence prevents your FTP from working.

This comment is very revealing.

The TC itself or something on the network is already using FTP.

Do a factory reset when you downgrade and use all SMB type names.. short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric for everything.

You simply hold down the option key when clicking version.. to get all possible versions.

Well after I tried everthing I could think of, I decided to buy and try the new Apple Airport Extreme. ( the latest tall one). Well it doesn't work either. I still have to reset the router everytime I need to use FileZilla FTP. The only good thing is that now I don't have to pull the plug to reset it. I can use the AirPort Utility app on my iPhone and reset it from the phone. Come on Apple Support! Can't anyone help with this problem???

More info here.

There are severe FTP issues with the AE.. the last couple of versions of the Gen1-5 firmware as well as the Gen 6.. See this thread.

The last post in this thread by.. SBeattie2

I think will condemn you to replacement of the AC by a router that actually conforms to standards.

SFTP might work.. see this thread.

The details seem to show that Apple simply do not care because FTP is not a protocol they need to use.

It's definitely a problem with the Apple Airport Extreme / Time Capsule, not the ftp client software. I just moved to a new home and replaced my Airport Extreme (the nice new vertical one that cost me a bundle) with the Wifi router supplied by my Comcast ISP.

My Filezilla ftp client software is working again as it once did before I had the Airport Extreme.

My new Comcast Wifi router, like many other non-Apple brands, has a Wifi Protected Setup (WPS) button making it super simple to connect with Wifi enabled printers and other devices. Just push the button! In the interest of appearance and style over functionality, Apple has again decided not to include important features that others have. Oh well.
