Q: iMessage on Mountain Lion does not send/recieve file transfers?

Hi weblogik77,

If you moved the .plists from one User Account to another you may find your don  not "Own" the file or may not have Read and Write permissions for it.

Using the  Finder > Go Menu > Go to Folder type  ~/Library/Preferences in the Dialogue box that appears

Find the com.apple.imservice.iMessage.plist  (I am presuming this is one of them)

Highlight it

Use the CMD and i Keys together (Get Info)

In the panel that shows scroll to the Bottom.

Highlight your name (shortname (me) should show)

Click the cogwheel type icon below the list

If this lists your name with the Me in brackets but is greyed out then you do own it.

The Highlighted name in the List show have Read and Write permissions

I have  a test account on this computer called "ralphjohns" which I have to make sure I am not confusing with the admin accounts called "ralph".

I am not sure how close your two account names might be.

Repeat for com.apple.imessages.bag.plist

If you moved other .plists they will have nothing to do with th iMessages account.

I found your instructions in another thread which did not work. I just found your post that PRAM resets time etc. I have been having a time issue. My clock keeps showing 4 hours earlier. When I reset my clock to the correct time iMessage DOES WORK. I am not sure when the time changes, on reboot or after coming back from the local college. But some where it changes. That stops the iMessage server from accepting my login. Any way to keep the time at the current. I believe I do have the correct time zone. It shows the Eastern part of the USA selected. Closest time zone NY. Check mark for auto select unchecked. On the date and time screen, set date and time auto unchecked as well. Says Apple Americas time.apple.com whereever that is. I had that checked when this problem first developed, nothing has fixed it yet.

If in System Preferences > Date and Time you have the Time Zone set and in the Date  and Time tab you have the Time Server set with the Automatic setting, the computer should not "lose" the date or time.

I have a G4 tower from 2003 that relies (in theory) on a small battery, which is referred to as the PRAM battery, for keeping that info "Alive".  I have never replaced this - they are supposed to have a time limit of about 5 years.

Instead I rely on the Time Server setting to correct the time during start up.

Laptops rely on the Battery being charged to do the same thing.

Normally if the time server is not working or the Date and Time settings are not set then the default is to go to the beginning of the Calendar the OS uses. Back in OS System 7 and OS 9 (around 1991 and 1998) then they went back to 1900

I know the current one has changed  but I can't remember the start date.

This still does not sound like your 4 hour shift though.

I would check the Automatically set option next to the Time Server name.

I am not sure why my time was off back then. I thought I had found the problem but imessages on the mac is still acting up. I am on my way out the door and will read up on your responses tonight. Ralph, I want to thank you for spending the time to try to answer my and others questions.

FYI I did bring it into the store and they checked the system and found it to be ok. Just adds to the mystery.

Could be that. I have book marked the page so I can reference it when I have the problem again. I noticed my time was off by 4 hours again late yesterday afternoon. I had not had time to change it, I was referencing something for a friend and figured I would change it later. I did not have the chance until now and it is the right time.

Considering this hd was just installed by Apple I am wondering if the clock changes due to the server. If you log onto a wireless service, such as college or your employer, does the macbook pro sync up to the server time?

I am away from home as I post, using my MacBook Pro on a Hotel WiFi.

It is using the Time Server.

This will need port 123 to be open.

Most routing devices will have ports up to number 1024 open as a matter of course.

If the Mac Firewall is on this port is allowed without any additional set up.

Shut Down the Computer.

Restart the computer whilst holding down CMD + ALT (the two keys to the left and right of the space bar) + P + R keys as well (4 keys in total).

Hold the keys down until you have two Start Up "Bongs"

I am having this issue of not being able to send files through the Messages app on my Macbook Pro.  I can send and receive on my iPhone however.  When I try to send them with the Mac, a red exclamation point shows up after a bit.  When I click the info button on the error, I get "http read stream event error" as the reason.  I have reset the PRAM and done the thing where you delete the "daemons" for Messages.  Still, cannot send or receive. 

This worked great for me.  As soon as I "Force Quit" the "IMTransferAgent" all of the pending transfers started and completed from the past 6 weeks.

Oh, sorry I've missed tab in Safari, this message should be in another thread.

There is an another possible cause exists, if your Mac was in support and had main (mother) board replacement technician could forget to change serial number on new board, so if you have serial like this

you need to take Mac to support again.

I had the same problem, and typing "nvram -d fmm-mobileme-token-FMM" in the terminal totally solved the problem!
