I called Apple and they performed a diagnostic. They confirmed that there were issues in the apps I was having trouble with, but said the issue was with the apps and suggested calling the app publishers.
Needless to say having issues with multiple apps from several different developers (on a brand new phone) shows that it is likely some type of OS problem. If you're having an issue similar to mine and what is above did not help you then I am afraid you may be out of luck.
