I suspect another part of the problem, or at least part of the delay in fixing the problem, is lack of alignment of priorities and/or single-point leadership across the involved development teams.  The Frankenstein feel of the podcast ecosystem leaves me with that impression.

I began to see that the new Podcast app was dowloading hundreds of podcasts on my iPhone and iPod Touch and definitley not syncing to iTunes on my iMac.  I ended up deleting the Podcast app from iTunes.  After that the podcast option in the Music app reappeared and the syncs are now working perfectly.

I should note that I removed the Podcast app in the profile for my iPhone, but iTunes kept reloading it.  I had to delete it as an app in iTunes.  That worked.

Like others I am amazed that Apple would release such a defective app, but maybe not.  Apple makes great hardware, but its software is notoriously bad.

Ok, so I tested something tonight and had some decent results.

If you subscribe to all of your podcasts within iTunes 11, and then sync to the iPhone, it will move the subscribed podcasts to Podcast.app. Each podcast synced to the device, won't be subscribed to from within iOS, but only within iTunes 11.

After you have synced, you can then turn on the subscription from within Podcast.app. Then, you can "refresh" from within the iOS app and get the latest episodes downloaded without syncing to iTunes. At the end of the day, or when ever I want to listen to the podcasts on my Mac, I then do a quick sync in order to flag podcasts on iTunes as Listened to, if I have already heard them on iOS.

No, this does not sync playback positions or listened to status via iCloud, but at least you can refresh and download podcasts on the app while sitting in the living room, while at the same time maintaining the ability to sync between your Mac and iOS devices when you are at the desk. iTunes won't ship a duplicate to the device (it used to for me).

    Hope this helps some.

Thanks RobFox76,  this worked for me. After I deleted the podcast app from iTunes and restarted iTunes, the app re-loaded. I synced again to my iPhone answered Not to allow auto syncing and Yes to syncing to computer/wire.

After a minute the 90+ unwanted podcasts disappeared from my iPhone.

Thanks Scionwest and lookabuny.  When you re-install the Podcasts app on your iOS device, the app asks these two questions:

    - Would you like to automatically download new episodes for your podcast subscriptions?

    - Would you like to use your Apple ID to sync your Podcasts and My Stations between devices?

What did you answer to these two questions?  thx

Personally I enabled syncing via iCloud with my apple ID and disable auto-downloading. I didn't want 1Gb podcasts downloading over LTE. Hitting the refresh button when on Wifi doesn't kill me.

    - Would you like to automatically download new episodes for your podcast subscriptions?  NO

    - Would you like to use your Apple ID to sync your Podcasts and My Stations between devices? YES

sorry for the all caps just wanted to be clear

I answered no to the 1st question to avoid cell charges - my assumption

Sync? Not. I've had enough and am deleting the Podcasts app from my ipad.

I gave up on the Podcast app long ago. After deleting it from my iPhone, podcasts are available in the Music app again and the sync from my Mac Pro work correctly for what I want - which is an identical view of episodes that are available, watched vs unwatched status and last play point. I have no need to download podcasts over the air.

I had exactly the same experience.   After I delelted  the standalone Podcast app, Podcasts reappeared as an option in the Music app.  No idea why, but I am glad that it did.   Podcasts now sync perfectly between my iMac and my iPhone and iPod Touch.   Like you I don't have any need to download podcasts over the air.  In fact, I prefer not to.

How can Apple put such a lousy app out there and not fix it?

The podcast app was not showing all my podcast episodes.  I deleted the app.  I am listening to my podcasts thru the music app.  They all show up there.

    Same for me.

I tried everything but the Podcasts App didn't sync the new podcasts in iTunes on my Mac with my iPhone and iPod.

    This solution worked for me:

    1) Delete the Podcasts App

    2) Go to the Music App and ignore the message that Podcasts are moved to the Postcasts App

    3) Choose "More.." in the Music App and look... there are the new Podcasts, correctly synced!

I hate to pile on and say "Me too!",  but I'm very frustrated with this.  I was excited to see the Stations feature in the new version.  I set it up and listened to the first batch of podcasts.  But now my station list won't refresh even though there are new versions of the podcasts available.   The podcasts are there on my iPhone.  Podcasts 1.2 recognizes them as unplayed,  but will not display them in My Stations.

Podcasts 1.2 is also insisting on loading old, old editions of podcasts, sometimes from last fall,  - seemingly somewhat randomly.

It's possible there is some "operator error" involved as I try to figure out Podcasts 1.2.   But why should it be so difficult?

Whatever happened to the good old days when Apple made intuitive software?

I have had to re-download the same episode of a show 5 times now to try and finish it. This app is a piece of junk. I am chiming in to add to the number of people who don't like the new app. How hard is it to organize list of audio files. Come on Apple you need to do better.

After reading a post above. I deleted the app and went back to using the music app. Ahhhhh Inner peace once more!
