Q: Reformatting an internal hard drive
There seems to be plenty of information on the web on how to reformat an internal hard drive running OS X. All of them involve using the original install disk. I'm running mountain lion 10.8.3 which was down loaded from Apple. I have the Snow Leopard install disc. I'd appreciate any advice on what my course of action should be. Cheers, jp

You should be able to use the Recovery HD to reformat your drive and re-install OS X (obviously everything will be deleted - as in gone forever - so backup anything that you want to keep via Time Machine or a clone).

However, if you are erasing the drive in order to sell/pass on the machine it needs to have the original OS installed as, apart from contravening the license agrement, the MLion upgrade is tied to your Apple ID and not the computer. Any future owner would have problems in re-installing the OS if that OS is not registered to them.
