I have relocated masters for several projects to an external HD using the "relocate masters" function from within Aperture, in order to save space on my internal HD. However, the size of the aplibrary file on my internal HD is the same size it was before. Why? Can I delete this now that the masters are stored, backed up and referenced elsewhere?

On no account delete the library. The Aperture library contains all your albums, books, slideshow, edits, and metadata. You will lose all the work you have done with your images.

However, the size of the aplibrary file on my internal HD is the same size it was before. Why?

How did you relocate? Did you move your original master image files or did you copy them when you relocated the masters?

Or can it be, that the original image files have not been contained in the Aperture library in the first place?  To check this, open your Aperture library in the Finder (Ctrl-click it, then select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up menu). Open the folder "Masters" inside. How large is it? Does it still contain any image files?

When I moved the files, from within Aperture I selected several projects (10 our of 12 of them), using the command key to select multiple projects, clicked "file" and "relocate masters for projects", then selected my external HD as the new location. Those files were successfully moved - I have a new folder on my HD with all the files, and the badges on the photos in Aperture show that they are referenced to the new external HD location.

As for the aplibrary file, when I do as you suggest, the "Masters" file still shows most, but not all, of my files. Some projects (earlier ones) are not there. The entire aplibrary file still contains the same GB count as originally. Strange.

Is it exactly the same?  When moving the files off-board, the space freed up on your internal drive won't go down by that same amount.  Aperture will keep previews, thumbnails, info, and other things on-board, so you won't regain 100% of that space.

But does it still contain duplicates of the original image files you just moved? If yes, they should be in a folder with the date of the import session when you first imported them), not the date the image was taken.

You could also open the "Masters" folder in the Finder and type ⌘F to start a search. Then enter the name of the filenmae of the original image file and look, if it is still there.

Thanks both for taking the time to help.

I have chipped away at the problem, thanks to your input. Yes, I see that the file sizes were in fact different. Also, I was confused because the new folder structure system (I relocated using year/month/date function) was based on image date, which was different from the original folder structure - as you noted Leonie - based on import session.

Here's what actually caused my problem: When I did the "relocate" operation, the masters were moved to the new location, but for some reason, this left the original aplibrary as a copy on my interhal HD. I have now just manually "moved" this file to the external HD as well as an additional back up copy. Not sure why this occurred or if this is normal, but all seems to be working well now and I have lots of copies.

Thanks again! Much appreciate the support.

Having just done this myself, Leonie (with your help, last weekend!) how can I confirm that the originals have indeed moved OFF my internal drive?  Where do I look?

When I did the "relocate" operation, the masters were moved to the new location, but for some reason, this left the original aplibrary as a copy on my interhal HD.

That is exactly what "relocate originals" is supposed to do: To split the library; keep the Aperture Library package, the .aplibrary with the databases and the previews, etc, where it is, and to move the parts, that need the most storage, the huge original files out of the way to a different place.

The idea is, that you will have the parts of your Aperture library that need to be accessed most frequently on your internal disk, for that is usually the fastest drive, and so Aperture will be most efficient and responsive. But it is o.k. to move the Aperture library as well to an external drive, if it is a fast drive.

left the original aplibrary as a copy

Relocating will not have copied your library, only moved the original master image files. You still have only one copy of the library and the library itself is necessary.

    Mark,

how can I confirm that the originals have indeed moved OFF my internal drive?

Select an image, that you relpcated in the browser and use the command "File > Show in Finder". It should ope a folder on your external drive.

Yep, that worked.  I confirmed that, just as I had hoped, everything from before 2012 was moved off-board.  (And the I looked at the ApertureLibrary/Masters, and only 2012 and 2013 are there.  Success!!)  Yippee!
