    Triple-click the line below to select it:

    /etc/hosts/

    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

    Services Reveal

    from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with an item selected. Double-click the file. A TextEdit window should open. At the top of the window, you should see this:

    ##

    # Host Database

    #

    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface

    # when the system is booting.  Do not change this entry.

    ##

    127.0.0.1                              localhost

    255.255.255.255          broadcasthost

    ::1                                        localhost

    fe80::1%lo0                    localhost

    If you see anything else, the file has been modified.

    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select

    Go Go to Folder...

    from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
