Q: HELP! My Library keeps resetting itself

Hello all

Since yesterday my iTunes library has reset itself, twice! I am on a HP Pavilion DV7 running Windows 8 with iTunes 11.0.2. It has been a while since I updated the software and have done absolutely nothing to my music folders or iTunes. It was working fine then when I fired it up yesterday morning everything was gone. I have tried reloading the library but the only library file is the blank library.

All my music is still on my computer it's just not in complied into a library anymore. And for some reson the only playlists i have in my iTunes folder are ones from several months ago that have since been deleted, updated, renamed (within iTunes itself), etc. I have 5000+ songs and I really don't want to try to repopulate my library again until I can get this problem solved. Here is a list of the files that are currently in my iTunes folder.

  • iTunes Library (1) - 9/1/2011 - iTunes Database File
  • iTunes Library Extras (1) - 8/17/2010 -  iTunes Database File
  • iTunes Library Extras - 9/3/2011 -  iTunes Database File
  • iTunes Library Genius (1) - 8/17/2010 -  iTunes Database File
  • iTunes Library Genius - 9/3/2011 -  iTunes Database File
  • iTunes Library - 3/26/2013 -  iTunes Database File (This is the current library file that is blank)
  • iT 1.tmp - 7/24/2011
  • iT 2.tmp - 3/24/2013
  • iT 3.tmp - 3/26/2013
  • iT.tmp - 7/23/2011
  • Temp File.tmp - 2/20/2013
  • iTunes Music Library - 3/26/2013 - XML Document

Out of all those files what can i delete? I feel like half of those aren't needed.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Thank you for any help you can provide

Well, I thought I had solved the problem by continuing to use AVG, but reverting to an earlier version of iTunes... but no... the latest AVG update seems to cause the loss of library and playlists for any iTunes version.  Therefore, the only solution that has worked is to uninstall AVG.  I replaced it with Avast free which has caused no problems.  Actually, I like Avast so much that I probably won't go back to AVG even if they repair this iTunes problem.

MSE got a good review here from tt2, also a good review online from a couple of website reviewers. It lacks good comments from my personal computer guru but she's a Linux person.

I removed AVG and the latest version of iTunes. Just at the moment I hate them both for letting me down in such a big way. I take it personally.

I installed MSE and an earlier version of iTunes, and I'm considering an even earlier version. Somewhere there exists a version I liked better.

iTunes has not reset since AVG was replaced by MSE.

AVG didn't go without a struggle, so I was pleasantly surprised when MSE installed so easily.

I have used AVG Free with Microsoft Security Essentials for a couple of years. MSE has caught more bugs than AVG Free. So when I rmoved AVG I wasn't too concerned. So far no problems with itunes.

Progress Report: 3.5 days since I uninstalled AVG & replaced it with MSE. iTunes library in tact and no issues.

Follow up - I still have my AVG Internet Security paid subscription running and have not lost my iTunes library again since I posted on their support forum. Perhaps they fixed something in the paid version but haven't fixed it in the free version, which kind of makes sense - take care of paying customers first. Hopefully the free version will get fixed too. I am crossing my fingers, but just figured I'd drop in to make note of this.

I do not believe that AVG would sabotage non paying customers, pretty sure you will see it happen again or it is fixed for everyone. JMHO.

    Hi guys,

I'd like to let you know that developers found the cause. It's invalid error handling in iTunes together with scanning of AVG scanning core. Fix is being prepared and should be released soon (today or later this week) via Virus database update.

Note that iTunes database should remain untouched, it's just blocked.

    Thanks, Franta. "

I didn't say they would sabotage the free customers, but the system for free vs paying is different and they have to start somewhere. As it is they are on it and it looks like all of AVG will be working and playing nice with iTunes soon.

So, this happened to me two days ago, and I was able to get the library back from a .tmp file, only having to do a few corrections.

Unfortunately enough, it happened again this morning.  This time not only are *none* of the temp files of any use, but the iTunes Library I backed up onto my desktop was also deleted.  So I have no way of rebuilding my library of 7,000 songs, which I was very careful to keep organized every single time I added anything to it.

I had AVG on my computer thinking an extra layer of protection couldn't possibly hurt.  Instead of keeping me safe of the "evil" internet however, all it's done is make a mess of the one thing in my life that's supposed to keep me sane - my music.

I have no issues uninstalling AVG and I will not being using any other AV program besides Common Sense 2013 until this problem is fixed.  If this had happened a couple years ago I'd have the free time to sit down and build a 7,000 song library from the ground up, but sadly that isn't the case anymore.

It's like a kid jumping into a pile of leaves you've freshly raked; scattering all of your work into a mess, and not seeming to care.  Meh.

Nope, MSE is working perfectly - no issues whatsoever. It's AVG that's causing the problems. Any other AV should be fine.

On a slightly related note, MSE takes really long to do a full scan. Not too pleased with that....

I know you didn't say, but that would be perception and no company can afford that.

BTW AVG/itunes on my computer never had any problems, but may be we use it differently.

Apparently Franta Bezny an employee of AVG says they are on the case and will update the AVG Forum when complete.
