1. Turning off that option and running a referenced library is not a good idea. It's more work for exactly no gain whatever, and is storing up issues for the future. See this
2. If you already have photos in iPhoto in the Managed format, then unchecking that option will not change anything for them, only for new imports. There is no way to change a Managed images to a Referenced ones without hacking the SQL database.
3. Why do you want to change? Perhaps there's another way we can suggest to use.

Thank you very much for the link and information about import in iPhoto and copies and referencing in iPhoto.
You asked "why" I wanted to change: I had read a couple of messages that implied a referenced library in iPhoto was better than importing with "copies" checked!!
I'm thankful that I posted my question and really appreciate your response that will save me a lot of trouble.
