Apr 5, 2013 8:46 AM in response to eliezeringby fruhulda,Do an installation of Snow Leopard. With this system you don't have to archive or delete anything, just install on top of what you have. Remeber to also install the updates. I would use the 10.6.8.Combo update.
You are not saying why Pacifist can't open the the Snow Leopard Intaller disk. Do you get an error message?

Apr 5, 2013 9:15 AM in response to fruhuldaby eliezering,At first I got an error message and wrote to Pacifist, and was told to clean my Install disc, which I did, and then didn't get the error message, but clicking on Open Install Disc on Pacifist didn't do anything. Nothing happened.
So you're saying if I re-install 10.6.8 it won't "erase" my harddrive? THanks fruhulda for responding

Apr 5, 2013 9:28 AM in response to eliezeringby fruhulda,Yes, that is what I am saying. This was new with Snow Leopard and I have reinstalled two times "on top" of what I had. Just make sure you have downloaded the update before you start the installation, otherwise you might get problems.

Apr 5, 2013 9:36 AM in response to fruhuldaby eliezering,And it will restore my utilties folder?
re: "make sure you have downloaded the update before you start the installation" -- how could I possibly start the installation BEFORE I've downloaded the update that I am installing???

Apr 5, 2013 9:45 AM in response to eliezeringby fruhulda,Yes, the utility folder is a part of the system installation.
re: as you can install on top of what you have on the computer the downloaded update in .dmg format will not change.
You find it here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Why I say this is so you wont get problems after installing Snow Leopard from the disk. When the system is updated do a Softeware update also because there are some more updates that is recommended.
Again - can you tell us if you get an error message whne you try to open the installation disk in Pacifist?

Apr 5, 2013 9:56 AM in response to fruhuldaby eliezering,I'm very confused, sorry for being dense. I thought I am downloading an update, then installing from that downloaded update, not using the original install disc at all.
When I first tried Pacifist, I got this error msg and Pacifist told me to clean the disc:
The following exception occurred while attempting to read the archive “OSInstall.mpkg”:*** -[NSConcreteFileHandle readDataOfLength:]: Input/output error
After cleaning the disk, when I clicked on OPEN APPLE INSTALL DISC--a window would open showing the install disc, I would "choose" it and the window would disappear, nothing would happen

Apr 5, 2013 10:03 AM in response to eliezeringby fruhulda,You need to use your Snow Leopard disk first to install the system, then you use the update.
I am not sure why Pacifist doesn't work.

Apr 5, 2013 10:30 AM in response to fruhuldaby eliezering,Just got this note from Pacifist:
The "Install Mac OS X" application is only openable in Lion and above. The ones in Snow Leopard and earlier do not contain the install packages, which are stored in an invisible folder on the DVD.

Apr 5, 2013 11:12 AM in response to eliezeringby fruhulda,Do you have the right installation disk? I have the first Snow Leopard disk and can open it in Pacifist.
Did you choose "Open Apple install discs" in Pacifist?
Which version of Pacifist do you have? I have version 3.0.10 but it worked with earlier versions too.

Apr 5, 2013 11:31 AM in response to eliezeringby fruhulda,I don't recognise the options you are showing. I don't get them with my Installation disc. I hope the Genius knows what to do.
Ah, I get it. You are reading on a Apple support page about erasing and installing. You are not obliged to erase at all!!!!!
