Sure buy it. However it does not compare to MBA or MBP. Completely different devices.
An iPad is mainly a multi-media device and easy to carry around, etc. The cool thing about them is that you can synch between your mac and the iPad though, just as with your iPhone.
Yes, the iPad is very easy to carry around. I had a friend who had a Kindle and when he got an iPad, he started using that instead as it way better than a Kindle and you can do lots more with it.
I am sure there are others who can expound more in detail on iPad versus a MB, but I think they will concur with me.

I just received an iPad M-1 from my wife and I am seeing how it works between my Macbook Pro and my iPhone 5. (My base is an iMac) It depends entirely upon how you use technolgy. I'm a writer so inputing text is very important, something the phone and the pad don't handle without a bluetooth keyboard.
On the other hand, to consume games and video, the iPad seems to be great. I'm still figuring out how best to consume my Podcasts and ITunes. The iPad is great for the video podcasts although listening is fine with me.
Were I to start over again I would dispense with the laptop and get a powerful iPad and a bluetooth keyboard.
Coulda shoulda woulda
