Exact same problem here! If I find any resolution, I'll post to this thread.

To add to the diagnostics ...

I just started experiencing the issue this morning (no changes made to any of the installations on my home systems, and I have a few : a MBA, a MB Pro 13", a MB Pro 15", a MacMini, an Apple TV, a Timecapsule, 2 Airport Expresses, 2 iPhone 5's, 3 iPad's, ...)

My MBA started interrupting playlist play-back on the Apple TV every song at 2 seconds before the track ends. Very annoying, sufficient to click the play button again to start the music ... but what are playlists for ??

I asked my wife to play a playlist on Apple TV on her MB Pro 13" ... no problem. Same versions of iTunes, firmware, ...

Next I tried to play again from my MBA on the internal speakers, no problem. On the kitchen speakers (connected to Airport Express) ... no problem. Then add in the Apple TV ("multiple speakers") ... NO PROBLEM. Then take out the kitchen speakers ... AGAIN PROBLEM.

Next test : play a playlist from my iPhone to the Apple TV : NO PROBLEM.

It sounds to me that this is not a matter of selecting channels on the routers, but rather an issue that is appearing with very odd combination of circumstances ...

Not sure what the solution is, if it means that for now I need to play on multiple speakers to get music out of my MBA to the HiFi, then that's what I will do, but it is not Apple-like ... time for Apple to get involved in this forum and show they care ???

My iTunes are located on my desktop Mac running Mac OSX 10.6.8.  iTunes is 11.0.2 broadcasting to an Airport Express 802.11n running 7.6.3.  My Extreme (802.11n running 7.6.3) is connected to a cable modem via ethernet to create my wireless internet.  The Express sends the wireless digital signal to a DAC-iT D/A converter which is plugged into my Integra receiver which is connected via copper to speakers upstairs, down and outside.

This arrangement has worked fairly well (fairly, as in some tunes would drop out occasionally and minimally, but very few and always the same tunes.  This lead me to think it might have been in the burning of the CD to iTunes).

Anyway, last night dropouts became routine on all tunes and consistently annoying.  To the point that it was difficult to listen to.  Sonos may get my business if Apple can't figure out what they've done to screw this up.  It's worked for about 18 months, so what happened?

Oh, and this happens with one set of speakers or multiple.  However, I switch between one set and multiple sets of speakers through the Integra, so it probably isn't related to the previous post.

BTW, what is an MBA?  MacBook A?

I guess I'm a little out of date.  I have an iMac.  Still works, though.

Wow - 2-1/2 years on this thread and doesn't seem like any progress made. I've been checking various forums and it seems this issue is still pretty prevelant. I extended my network with an AE out in the garage. Gets plenty of signal and joins my main network with no issues (WPA2, Stealth). Unfortuantley, it plays one song from my iTunes playlist on my iMac and quits. Consistently.

Of course, it had issues inside the house as a simple extender as well - I'd glance over every now and then and notice the green LED was glowing amber. So I'd disconnect it, plug it back in, and I'd be good for another day or two.

I'm an all Apple household, but I'm starting to be pretty convinced that the AE is *still* not ready for primetime. It's only been what, 6 or 7 years? lol

Looks like it's time to sell the AE and look at Sonos, since the whole reason I did this was Logitech dropping the Squeezebox support with Mountain Lion.... Boooooo

    I also had this experience.

iphone --- > single speaker works fine

itunes  --- > single speaker works fine

but if streaming to multiple speakers the music would cut out at the end of songs. this sometimes would happen after every song or every other song. This would happen despite the song still "playing" in itunes. Restarting the song or pausing/playing, skipping to the next song, would start the sound again only for it to happen again at the next song break. it seems that when a song stops, itunes loses connectivity to the airplay speakers so my solution was to make sure a song/music never stops: set up crossfade in the Preferences of iTunes. I set mine to 5 seconds, and so far the music has continued without stops for >1 hour. Hopefully this works for other people as the "changing the router to channel 9" solution by itself did not do anything for me.

    I have a similar problem.

When playing songs through AirPlay to my AppleTV, certain songs will refuse to play. This is what happens:

A song will pause itself with 2 seconds left. Hitting play will toggle to "play" (the play button changes to pause) but then IMMEDIATELY pause again. This will continue indefinitely. Hitting next track works to go to the next song, but it will not play. The same problem (hitting play causes it to immiediately pause again) happens. I've tried scrubbing to different times. This isn't for particular songs. It appears to be random. I have tried resetting everything. multiple times.

This problem ONLY occurs when using Airplay. If the issue occurs, I can switch to computer speakers, and everything works fine. As soon as I switch back to Airplay, suddenly there is a problem.

Needless to say, it is super annoying.

Is your music stored on a NAS? This happens to me sometimes, but its an issue with either itunes or my wireless connection and not AirPlay. It happened prior to my background/using AirPlay systems

I have a MacBook Pro with 2 hard drives. My system is on a Solid State Drive in the main bay, the music is on a HDD in the optical bay.

    nBode,

I think El Chode may be onto something. I recently began having problems with my Airplay cutting out when streamed from iTunes on my MacBook Pro. It had worked for several years. I've been racking my brain on what may have changed. I thought it might have coinsided with my upgrade to iTunes 11, but I also recently moved my iTunes library to a external disk separate from the boot drive. I wonder if both of our problems are related to having the library on a drive other than the boot drive.

BTW, my Airplay works fine from my iPhone and iPad. It's only from iTunes that I have the problem. Unfortunately, I don't have enough room on my boot drive to move my library back.

Indeed, I have been having precisely the same issue, and my very large (1.2TB) library of Apple lossless music is stored on an external Time Capsule. Formerly, my music was stored on an external RAID array. The move to Time Capsule did not make this problem go away.

Also of note, when I switch from wireless to ethernet connection on my Macbook, the problem instantly disappears. I have tried running wireless off my cable router, and separately letting the Apple TC handle the wireless, with the problem occurring consistently in both wireless scenarios. Also, i recently moved from a mid-2011 Macbook Air to the latest Macbook Pro w/Retina and the problem persists unchanged.

When I use the Apple TV to play tunes from the laptop via home sharing, there are no drops in sound, only when sharing FROM the Mac TO the Apple TV.

The common elements appear to be: wireless connection, iTunes on a Mac laptop, large library stored on an external drive, using AirPlay from the laptop to an Apple TV.

Despite this exhaustive research and information, I have precisely zero confidence that Apple cares enough to read these discussion notes, or to ever acknowledge or address this plaguing and extremely common issue.

    Same issue here.

Ipad mini to bt home connect to play through stereo.

I thought it may be an issue as I use Amazon mp3, but tried other apps and as soon as media changes, it drops. Watch one YouTube video, listen to a song, stream from safari. One and done.
