After my internet connection was re-activated this weekend I get an error message when I try to access incoming mail although I can send mail via my apple mail account. I can access Safari, and can receive and send mail if I access Comcast.net via Safari however I can't "Get Mail' through Apple mail.

the error message is:

Alert
There may be a problem with the mail server or network.Verify the settings for account "Comcast.net" or try again.

The server returned the error: The connection to the server "Mail.comcast.net" on port 465 timed out.

I did check the settings.
I also have checked the box:  Use SSL

Any suggestions?  Klaus1?

Please complete your profile, we don't know the version of OS X installed on your system. However the first thing I'd recommend is reading Apple's advice in Mail Troubleshooting.

OS X 10.6.8  I did look into Mail Troubleshooting but wasn't able to find an example of my particualr problem. If I have to uninstall and reinstall Mail I'd like some direction. Will I lose all my previous emails if I uninstall? Is there a way to back up email or do I have to save all of them to the desktop in folders?

Keep looking and working with your ISP, the issue isn't in Mail. You may have a corrupt setting though, I'd recommend opening your Mail - Preferences and manually entering each setting. Even though they may look OK one may be corrupt.

Also Mail cannot be uninstalled it's part of OS X. You can however re-install OS X however that is not call for in your case and would be a very unwise thing to to.
