Q: iMessage not syncing between iPad and iPhone

Hey all,

So, I have a 3GS and an iPad 2, both on iOS 5.0. One of the advertised iMessage features is that you can start the conversation on one device, and finish on the other. However, messages I receive on my iPad don't show up on my iPhone, and vice versa.

I've heard that this has to do with the Caller ID defaulting to the device's phone number on the iPhone, but I'm not 100% sure if this is the case or not. I've also heard of other people having success of this syncing between iPhone and iPad, so I'm really not sure.

Just wondering if anyone has any insight as to why iMessage isn't syncing between my iPad and my iPhone that are both signed into the same Apple ID/iCloud account?

Thanks,
Behn

I'm having the same problem. The last time my iPhone and iPad was syncing messages was march 14th. I've tried 3 different things I've read in forums. Underneath my messages it doesn't show up the option to use your phone number. Not on FaceTime either. It all shows up on my phone, just not my iPad.

The cell phone number only showed up in the "caller id" sections when the iMessage and the Facetime Apple ID's matched on my iPad and my iPhone. When they all matched iMessages began operating as before and sycing between devices.

I am also having the same issue.   I spent 2 hours on the phone with Apple Care about this yesterday.  Still not working. . . it was working just fine until about a month ago. . .

I also recently had problems but it was because I removed an iCloud email address from my list of contactable addresses so that I was down to just my iPhone number and Gmail address.

My iPad and Mac lost the ability to send from my iPhone number for some bizzare reason, hence any messages that came to iPhone never synched up on the other devices:

Logged out of iMessage and FaceTime on ALL devices. On the Mac I also exited the apps after doing this.

Starting with my iPhone I logged back in and waited 2 minutes.

Next, I went to iPad and logged in to Messages and my phone number appeared and mail address. Did this with both Messages and FaceTime.

Next, was Mac and both appeared again on both Messages and FaceTime.

    Job done.

I've done that. I've done everything I've read in 5 different discussions. I did nothing different between March 14th and March 15th, just all of a sudden on March 15th my ipad and iphone were no long syncing. I need new ideas besides logging out and back in. I've seen other people have this problem who have tried that and it does not work for them either. This is not user error.

This was so helpful. I'd give you a check but I don't know how. (I'm new to this.)

There's no way to add phone number but I typed it in anyways where it said add email, it's there but of no use.

    My texts are a mess.

I just tried that and yes it worked to get missing texts that had only showed on my iPad, but my iPad is still not texting proper unless I use it to text, it's two different convos.

I use my iPad mostly for texting due to being visually impaired. I even told my contacts to add my apple email to my contacts, that was a tip that didn't work for me.

It's most definitely a glitch, because my old iPad 2 has the texts working. Email is working.

I rarely use my old iPad and wasn't going to buy an expensive iPad cover for my new iPad when the old one fit. Now I need to buy another cover, so I can use it to text. I only have one hand and it slides off me with no cover.

I hate to *****, I realize I'm in the minority, but when I bought iPads because I am handicapped and they turn it into useless for me it's very annoying.  Same with the camera on my phone that's now not working, helped me out with only one hand.

Apple was wonderful for handicapped people. It's not now.

Question, is it at all possible for a message that was received to show on my iphone as sent after syncing?

I just found myself in the same predicament when upgrading my iPhone 4S to a 5S. I followed johnmacward's suggestions and, while in the process, realized I hadn't added my email address to the "send and receive" section of iMessage. Now my devices sync properly!
