I understand that Office 2013 for Windows still does not have OpenType support for small caps.

Thank you. Then I have to stay with Apple and hope they see the need to fix it - though in my experience after the quite stable system I bought with MacBook Pro Mid 2009 every release by Apple had unwelcome bugs. There was also another major font issue but I think Apple was able to fix it in 3 months or so and here someone on the forum offered a solution too that worked for me.

Thank you. (Thank you also mforbes for the workaround but I don't want to manipulate/change all the opentype fonts I am using.)

Do you have 10.8.3. and Pages 4.3.? I checked again the problem with the auto-hyphanation still remains the same. Could you give a screenshot?

I attach a screenshot here - the text where I recognized this the first time. I assume its related to version 4.3. because I cannot remember to have experienced it in Pages 4.2. In the text there is only one hyphanation but that's not an auto one but because it's written Lha-Sa.

Have you considered Mellel or Nisus Writer?

Have you considered Mellel or Nisus Writer?

I've considered Mellel and used a trial version but it appeared a bit complex and not that easy to handle. To get used with Pages I bought "The Missing Manual" with 500 pages and this was excellent to get used to Pages and its function. Once used I hesitate to change to another program and to restart to get used to a new program + reading how to hanlde it.

However, if you think Mellel or Nisus Writer is worth the effort: what of the two programs would you recommend and do you have a recommendation of a book that explains the function (especially typography) well? Maybe it's really time for a change.

Yes.  You are showing the wrong Inspector pane for activating hyphenation, however.

Ha ha ha. You are right! Thanks a lot - my mistake. Maybe I should have looked again in my "Missing Manual" Book. It works if I activate the hyphanate panel in the page setting tab.

It's hard to know which of these might best meet your needs.  They are more word processors than dtp apps. I think they both have free trials and downloadable manuals (from their web sites, not the app store).

Thank you. The good thing with Pages is that its also a good programm for posters etc. / has a graphic processor.

    Maybe a Good News …

Today the Developer Bug Reporting Team contacted me via Email based on my entry on the Apple Bug Reporter site. Though they didn't say anything to the issue but wondered that I am not in their database, at least they noticed the bug report and I hope they go a bit beyond checking if I am in the database or not …

Let's see. I replied and hope they fix it soon. I also added an amendment that the Apple delivered fonts, like Hoefler, work with respect to the Small Caps OT function via typo pane.

I would suspect that they work because they are not OT, instead they probably use AAT, Apple's own typography system.

Ok, I got a new reply:

You can sign up for a free or paid Mac or iOS Developer Program account and file your bug here:

    https://developer.apple.com/programs/

    Thanks for your response.

    Best Regards,

However, so far I cannot see an option for a free Mac or iOS Developer Program account, can you? They ask to enroll for a $99/year.

(Well, do I have to pay to report Apple's bugs to Apple?!)

    The link here https://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/ says:

Log in to file a bug report

    Apple Bug Reporter

All developers who have registered as an Apple Developer may submit bug reports and enhancement requests on Apple products and track these submissions using the Apple Bug Reporter.

    Thanks. Very useful.

This site says that I am registered already. I replied again to the Bug reporter team and sent a screenshot. Maybe there is a confusion with the emails - they write me under another email address than I am registered - though I stated this already in my last reply maybe they didn't get aware of this …

Also after the new OSX update to 10.8.4 the problem with the non functioning small caps OT feature still exists. The Apple Bug Reporter Team has not given any answer or hint if they are working on it …
