FCP/FCPX to Avid Media Composer 7 (now $999)

Early today, Avid announced that Media Composer 7 will be coming out sometime within the next few months (sometime around June I believe). In addition to just some of the key features listed below, there is a huge price reduction; From $2,500 to $999.


I am just curious as to if this reduced price will make anyone think about possibly moving over to Avid?

Accelerating HD delivery from high-res source

As more content is created with high-res cameras and delivered as HD, editors typically must perform time consuming transcode and resize operations before true editing can begin. Media Composer 7 eliminates this step by enabling editors to work directly in HD from the high-res source, while maintaining full creative control of image framing.

Media Composer 7 offers a wide array of key new features, including:

  • AMA media management — Media linked via Avid Media Access (AMA) now benefits from the complete suite of industry-leading media management tools formerly reserved for native Avid media.
  • Dynamic media folders —Accelerates and simplifies AMA media management tasks automatically in the background.
  • FrameFlex™ tool and LUT support — Enables editors to ingest 2K, 4K, and 5K media with real-time color space conversion and deliver content directly to HD.
  • Master Audio Fader —Enables editors tocontrol overall program volume and insert plug-ins for compression, equalization, and compliance metering.
  • Clip Gain —Editors can adjust gain on a specific clip, independent of track-based automation, without engaging separate audio tools.
  • Symphony Color Correction option —Lets editors add advanced color correction tools previously found only in Avid Symphony.
  • Interplay Sphere for Mac — Enables creative teams to edit, share, tag, track, and sync media as it flows through the production process anywhere in the world (Media Composer Interplay Edition required).

Availability & PricingMedia Composer 7 will be available in the online Avid Store and from Avid resellers worldwide starting in June 2013. Customers can purchase Media Composer 6.5 now and receive a free upgrade to version 7 when available. Pricing will be as follows:

  • Media Composer 7 Interplay Edition — $1499 USD

    I'm certainly looking to switch to Avid.  I recently startred working with HBO and they use Media Composer in their on-air dept.  They also use final cut, but version 7.  Not X.  I've owned and used Premier and FCP for over a decade, but I've only recently begun to use the Avid.  They certainly do things differently, but I must say that I feel the end result is a bit smoother, in my opinion.  I'm curious to see if MC 7 integrates some of the intuitive features that Premier and FCP have, such as the Blade tool.  That is at least one tool that I sorely miss when cutting on Avid systems.

    This FCPX forum,what are the problems you have with FCPX at the moment that would cause you to switch.? I have no intention to switch over to Avid. I happy with FCPX no look back.

    I have used FCPX for Broadcast since version 10.0 without any problems. It pains me whenever I must, for any reason, use any other NLE (I used FCP since version 1.0). I would not change to Avid or any other NLE, including FCP7 even if they were 10 bucks.

    Why would you want to use a slow, cumbersome, unnecssarily complex editing application that does a lot of things most users will never need.

    I am interested, but why has the price come down so much? are they hurting due to the low price of FCP X?

    Although Avid has had some problems at the corporate level, I would imagine they simply see an opportunity to pick off some editors who work in markets where Avid is not now necessarily strongest. You'll recall that when FCPX was first introduced there was a lot of angst from FCP users and in response, both Adobe and Avid offered deep discount pricing for a limited time to those editors. This looks like a repeat.

    Although I'm still at an early stage, I've been disappointed with Final Cut Pro X. Here are aspects of it that I will be looking toward Avid to better. And I will be looking.


    The storyline method of editing has certainly identified a mainstream usage pattern but it's too unforgiving to outliers. Getting what I want out of the elastically branching storyline is more time consuming for me than optimising unruly track stacks.


    I do like event grouping for media since every sight, sound or model comes from one event in the past or other. However, it needs to better address the reality of the many storage volumes we must tend.


    I'm in two minds about visual clip skimming. I get a ton of media at my beck and call but the many snippets I can locate and mark end up too small to grab, so i'm forced to make bigger selections and refactor in the storyline.


    The app's interface chrome is simply inappropriate. Apple's own iOS is embracing 'flat design' which acknowledges that performance means removing distractions from users' sight. With its heightened dependence on dynamic, gilt-edged UI elements, FCPX is a step backwards. Maybe it looks nice in a trade show booth but it's distracting to both my CPU and the stories in my head that i'm trying to express.


    I've got a set of FCP7 projects that have been waiting to see if they'll get a trip through 7toX. It's not looking good.
