My iphone 5 has been having issues with wifi for the last week or so.

I did buy the iphone 5 on the first day ther arrived and have not have any major issues and have been updating the iOS as sson as it is released. I did update iOS 6.1.3 the day it was released and was not having any problems with wifi intil abut a week ago.

The phone would disconnect from wi fi within 10-15 minutes of use or even earlier.

Nothing works to restore the connection. I have tried multiple recommendations including restarting the phone and turning on and off the wi fi.

The only thing that has worked every time has been taking the router off power and then re starting.

I thought my router may be the problem.

But when I checked all other internet connected products including Computers, Internet Phone and anoher iphone4, all have been working great with no loss of internt.

Is only the iphone 5 that is having the problems. And I can not blame the iphone 5 (hardware) as my wife's phone (anothe iphone 5) is doing the same.

Again I'm not sure if I can blame ios 6.1.3 as I did update on the first day of release and the problem just started about a week ago.

Did contact tech support and they asked me to restore the phone via i tunes that I have not tried yet as I work st different sites and have different internet passwords and all would be lost if I do factory or itunes restore.

Its getting very frustrating. ANd to make worse, can not even complaint at work as I would be picked up as I have ben always competeing and fighting for the apple products at work with people who have Samsung.

Now I can not even complaint at work.....just suck it up.....Do I switch to Samsung?

This has been the theme for me as well: that the iP5 or it's software is forgetting something. Or NOT forgetting something.

I have went through 2 IPhone 5s with both having the 6.1.3  on them from ATT. The first was a total fluke to do any networking at all, would not pick up WIFI or do hot spots, I work on this till no end trying to get it to work. First IPhone at that out the box, I have been using atrix 2 4g moto and HD works beautiful on side this trash Apple? I have Att so I took it back to store and they try till they were blue in the face. I like these fools really don't have any idea on what to say. I said guys quit spinning your wheels and wasting your time and mind replace the phone.

So they replaced it and same IPhone 5 NEW same 6.1.3 and it works WIFI, blue tooth and hot spot BUT, BUT APPLE still is an un worthy product or software issue. You have to be standing on top the WIFI router / signal for it to work as soon as you walk one room over goodby WIFI signal. Same thing with blue tooth, I pair with my sound bar and play music or Pandora and cant walk 5 ft from the connection.

My friend APPLE people pay entirely to much for these cell phones for them to work in this poor fashion. Apple you call your self Engineers?? Well where is the fix this thread has been talking this problem for months. I guess you may have a fix when your stock falls 280 points are is part of the plan to cause it too.  I am Electrical Eng by trade and this is an absolute joke to allow this to even go onto the market with these problems. This is frustrating so many and out of your class.

I will be bring this 2nd IPhone back to AT&T and will not be leaving with a 3rd. Going back to the Atrix 2 4G HD latest and greatest puts this IPhone 5 to a shame as it works perfectly fine side by side every where I have traveled with this IPhone 5. .

    Good luck to you Apple

I am posting this as a help to those who are suffering the same fate as I during the Ipod 5 wifi situation.  This was a helpful chat with an apple support agent who gave me a couple things to try.  I hope this fixes your problems or at least points you in the right direction.

Note:  I have not attempted anything here yet as I am away from Itunes so I can not revert the backup.

    Joe:

Hello, my name is Joe. Welcome to AppleCare chat support. Please give me a moment to look over your information.

    Joe:

Hello Sam, how are you doing?

    Sam:

    things could be better.

    Joe:

I'm sorry to hear, how may I help you today?

    Sam:

having some trouble with the 2.4 Ghz radio on wireless N/G networks.

    Sam:

    on my Ipog 5th gen

    Joe:

I can understand your concern. Are you having issues connecting?

    Sam:

No. I can connect, and the connection is stable but only 1/16th of my home bandwidth is used.

    Sam:

My home network is 7 Mbps and I receive exactly 0.30 mbps

    Sam:

this is preventing: facetime, skype, youtube and other high bandwidth applications

    Joe:

Strange, let me see what we can figure out.

    Joe:

First if I could ask the serial number to your device. My system didn't pull anything up.

    Sam:

    [Censored]

    Sam:

I just bought it at futureshop on a 4th gen trade in. wishing I had kept my 4th gen.

    Joe:

I understand. What troubleshooting have you done so far?

    Sam:

while you look that up I will type out all the information I have gathered during my debugging days.

    Sam:

    Ok

    Sam:

    so

    Sam:

    two networks. Home, and campus.

    Sam:

    Campus It works flawlessly.

    Sam:

home I barely get any speed at all

    Sam:

    Now Campus is using

    Sam:

    N, WPA2-Enterprise, AES

    Sam:

    campus is also B/G/N

    Sam:

    home I was using: WPA2-personal, TKIP/AES, 20 Mhz, N/B/G.

    Sam:

I tried matching campus settings which, after talking with the technicians here are quite simple, no advanced networking other than the security and wireless mode

    Sam:

at home I found one thing and one thing alone that fixed it

    Sam:

    using wireless mode B

    Sam:

G would sometimes work. approx 20% of the time I would get better speed. N was 0%. I was constantly bottlenecked at .30 mbps. and it wouldnt fluctuate. it was very stable at .30 mbps.

    Sam:

So I tried resetting facotry settings on my router, different modes, different encryptions, dmz,

    Sam:

    static IP

    Sam:

the only thing that allowed my home connection to function with my Ipod 5 was B mode.

    Sam:

    now

    Sam:

There is a laptop, an internet radio, a 1st gen ipad in my home that all function flawlessly on whatever setting I choose. My 4g ipod had no issues whatsoever. But the 5th gen ipod refuses to break .30 on anything other than B wireless mode.

    Sam:

however on campus I receive in the upwards of 10 mbps.

    Sam:

But there is nothing special about the campus network.

    Sam:

The last two steps I was going to try were 1: rollback router firmware to an earlier version OR 2: try WPA2-enterprise encryption.

    Sam:

and last ditch was buy a new router to try it and see if it fixes the problem.

    Sam:

and thats been the past 48 hours

    Sam:

i also followed your reset network settings and recommended router settings guide with no success.

    Joe:

Hmm, that's all great isolation. Thank you for the information Sam. We'll take a look and see what we can do. Have you done anything with the iPod itself?

    Joe:

Okay so you have reset the network settings.

    Sam:

its brand new setup, newly bought, running 6.1.3

    Sam:

it synced ok, no other issues. siri works fine. its only the wifi problem.

    Sam:

Im using the speedtest.net app to test speed. at home Its slow on campus its normal.

    Sam:

no other device in my home is having issues and again, my 4g didnt either it was fine.

    Sam:

I also have ruled out the case blocking the wifi antenna

    Joe:

No problem. Just to test I'd like you to turn off the encryption for just a moment if you are comfortable doing that. I want to see if it gets a better speed like this as I have seen this on 5th Generations.

    Sam:

im not at home at the moment I am on campus.

    Joe:

Once you turn it off, you will reset your network settings on the iPod. Then if you can go back in and connect to your network again, and then do a speed test.

    Sam:

but i assume it would be under the wireless settings in my 192.168.0.1 config?

    Joe:

    Correct.

    Sam:

right. Well I will add that to the test list.

    Joe:

Routers usually have a default password unless you have changed it since then.

    Sam:

yes I have Im very capable with programming my router.

    Sam:

Is apple aware that there is a mass problem with either the 5th gen wifi radios or IOS 6 and wifi compatibility?

    Joe:

Awesome, it does seem to be network specific. However it can still be the iPod software itself.

    Sam:

there are forum pages over 250 posts long of people having this issue on multiple different networks where the only problem is the ipod/iphone 5

    Joe:

Yes our engineers are aware of that, but compared to the devices that don't have these issues it is a very small percentage. What you see online doesn't ever compare to the number of devices that don't have these issues. Just a thought to keep in mind. Not to say our engineers aren't working on this. There are updates and patches being worked on now.

    Sam:

    hmm really? fascinating.

    Sam:

may I ask, is it a hardware problem or a firmware problem? and what is causing the small percentage to have the issue?

    Joe:

Yes it was an issue with iOS 6 and several devices.

    Sam:

    several devices?

    Sam:

different platforms or a certain batch of ipod/iphones that went through manufacture?

    Joe:

    I iPhone 4, 4S, 5, iPod 5th gen.

    Sam:

    ah

    Sam:

    thanks for answering that

    Joe:

Not a problem Sam. We are definitely in the works of getting everything squared away. We will also get your issue resolved even if we have to do some digging.

    Joe:

But we will definitely figure something out for you.

    Sam:

do you know what it is specifically that is related to this issue so that I may try to focus my efforts? security encryption on N networks? wireless modes?

    Joe:

The good thing is that it works fine on your campus network. It would be bad if it didn't

    Sam:

if it is security authorization I can create an exception in my router while leaving others unchanged.

    Sam:

which is weird right? campus is using the same security as I am

    Joe:

I've seen where routers are the issue several times just not being compatible with the device. It's hard to say right now though it seems that you have updated the firmware on your router and you do have another iOS device working on it. So it could possibly be the software on the iPod itself.

    Sam:

I will try their EXACT config when i return home this evening. I used my laptop in collaboration with a network tech to get the network specifics which I will apply to my home router in attempt to increase throughput on the ipod itself.

    Sam:

i will also try no encryption.

    Sam:

I have been using the same firmware for months having no problem with the ipad or my ipod's predecessor; the 4g.

    Sam:

so, no encryption, campus settings, router firmware rollback, new router trial period. is there anything else you can suggest that I have not already tried?

    Sam:

and if all else fails I will leave my router on B mode for the time being as I do get my 5-7 mbps speeds on that mode for whatever reason.

    Sam:

but I would like to make use of the duual core A5 chip in combination with the dual band N I have available at home.

    Joe:

The only other troubleshooting you may want to try would be with the iPod directly. You can try restoring it to factory settings and setting it up as new. Even though it was brand new with the newest update, it could be an issue with the copy of the software that's currently installed. You can definitely give that a shot and see if that may help. However since it is seeming to be more of a network related issue it may or may not help, but it is worth a shot.

    Sam:

    perhaps.

    Sam:

i did restore from a backup of the 4g

    Sam:

could it be possible that this small percentage of people....restored from a backup of an older ipod thereby corrupting the network protocols in the ipod 5 gs?

    Joe:

    Exactly.

    Joe:

That definitely is a possibility and something I have seen over and over again.

    Sam:

also how do I setup my ipod as "new" but then sync all my content to it without....hm.....oh bugger id have to delete my ipod backups in itunes then sync, then id have to re-enter all my mailing information. ah bugger.

    Sam:

because any use of hte old backup would reintroduce the problem to IOS 6.1.3

    Joe:

    Precisely.

    Sam:

    O.o"

    Joe:

    Sorry,

    Sam:

    im taking notes. lol.

    Sam:

and i will keep my 5G. I love the processor too much to part with it and I will keep an eye out for 6.1.4

    Joe:

You wouldn't have to delete the backups you can leave them on so you have the data available just in case it isn't the backups. However 75% of the time it is putting the backup back on the device that causes several issues.

    Sam:

    hmm true

    Sam:

so how do i keep the backups but setup this ipod as brand new, then sync all my apps and music from itunes without the backup being thrown on there?

    Joe:

To do that iTunes will ask you how you'd like to set up your device. You can just restore it in iTunes. When the restore has finished you will get a prompt in iTunes asking if you'd like to set up as new or restore from a backup. If you continue the set up on the iPod directly after the restore, you will have a screen that asks you the same set up options.

    Sam:

so plug it in. ipod page> restore Ipod (erases all content) > prompt for use with backup or new > new> it will start up> sync all content > speed test before I start changing things

    Sam:

    right?

    Joe:

    Exactly.

    Sam:

    NAHA~!

    Sam:

I love progress. in whatever direction!

    Sam:

if we can figure out what it isnt we are that much closer to finding out what is the problem that isnt what we think it is.

    Joe:

Definitely Sam, you can refer to your case [Censored] so we can continue where we left off when you have attempted those other steps. Hopefully by then it will be resolved.

    Sam:

oh, speaking of ipod updates. When Itunes is downloading ipod updates, it will eventually, during the download, time out and I have to start over. I have added firewall exceptions as well as turned my AV software off completely but it still times out. :/

    Sam:

work around is I just update on the ipod on a faster network.

    Joe:

    Do you use AVG?

    Sam:

    nop.

    Sam:

    kaspersky.

    Joe:

Hmm, have you ran a diagnostic test on iTunes network connectivity?

    Sam:

ive added exceptions for all the bonjour services and ipod server files.

    Sam:

hmm no. not in a while because the store loads, it updates apps fine.

    Sam:

it will update all apps and download them fine its only the ipod update server that times out on me.

    Sam:

    when i got the 5 I updated to.......6.1.3.....at a friends place....

    Sam:

the ipod was new then, no backup and the wireless was screaming BEFORE i restored from backup.

    Sam:

i tried to backup but it said the backup was a newer version. the ipod worked fine on my friends network and on mine before I restored from backup.

    Sam:

    hmmmm...

    Joe:

That seems to be the issue Sam. A

    Joe:

I would bet that is the issue.

    Sam:

I got the ipod, used it on 6.0, updated it on a wireless network, used it fora day, THEN i was at home again and restored from backup then BAM youtube wouldnt buffer properly.

So in the end apple is aware of the problem and is working to patch it for those of us, who they say is a minority, who are having problems with wifi.  I hope this helps some and lets others know that apple haven't abandoned us, they are simply in their cave working.

Hi guys I have the same problem with my iphone 5, I can see the connections but I can't connect , only if I near the router(2 meter) , but it *****!, with my iphone 4s I could connect easily(6.0.2).

I'm from Peru, my uncle gave me the iphone 5 (6.1.2) locked by AT&T(I unlocked it by IMEI on a webpage) and had the problem that I mentioned, I updated to 6.1.3 and it was the same.

I check the warranty on the page: https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do

and says: Repairs and Service Coverage: Active (limits apply)

Your product is covered for eligible hardware repairs and service under AppleCare+.

Estimated Expiration Date: November 14, 2014

My friend will going to USA on the next month, my question is , if my friend arrive the iphone to any apple store, could they change my iphone 5? it will be locked and I will have to unlock again or it will be unlocked?

I really appreciate your answers! Thanks

I am having the same problem as many others. I have read all the posts and no success. The main problem start for me after updating my iphone 5 from os 6.0 to 6.1. This is why i think it can be solved by firmware update, but till now, updating to 6.1.3 also not helping me. Is it true that it may be hardware issue?

before updating to 6.1 I can connect to my work network without problem, but after that, I must place my iphone within 2 meters of the router to connect to wifi. Its really disappointing, because whenever i go i cant connect to wifi. It start to making me crazy, because iphone 5 without wifi connection and without internet availability is just same as ..... .

    PROBLEM SOLVED FOR ME ALLHAMDULILLAH

After sending my phone to Germany , cannot get replacement from Apple. Today i was in the service in my town and afer detaching motherboard , guy spotted disconnected little tiny resistor from inside side of motherboard. Any way after he is connect this little resistor and check all other connecters set up my iphone and afer many days with crappy wifi i have 3 bars and dont need sitting next to router.

My advice. For you who are living near Apple store and you buy your iphone in this country (Apple dont have international warranty )  go and get replacement......

BUT all of you who are like me livin in crappy country without apple store. go to respectabile service and check all conections bcs THIS IS HARDWARE PROBLEM ......

(I was talking about poor wifi range )

GOOD LUCK FOR ALL OF YOU FOLKS

I was able to browse Safari but could not check email on Mail Apps. After I upgraded to 6.1.3, the Safari started to fail.

I conducted more tests with iP5 with 6.1.3 and the same 'problem' 2.4GHz router. I tried different combinations of the router settings. I could connect and ping from iP5 to router, and router to iP5, but was unable to browser Safari and check Mail Apps. Then, I saw a post saying that he could connect if router was set to 802.11b, so I decided to set my router to 802.11g only (my router only has this option). To my surprise, I could browse Safari and check email thru Nail Apps.

Another evident that this is 6.1.3 issue.

I am so ready to chuck this device out the window based on this flaky wifi.  Apple's corporate silence just makes it worse - no indication that the problem exists, (let alone that it is even being worked on), aside from the occasional moment of candor from the Apple tech support/genius bar.

Here is an AT&T perspective on the issue, based on a recent Tech Chat I had with them.

ATTREP: i see that you are having Wi-Fi issues today is this correct?

ME: It has been pretty consistent since getting my iphone 5. IOS 6.1.3 hasn't helped matters. Sounds like there are a sizeable number of us out there, based on the apple forums.

ATTREP: I will be glad to help you with this today, do you have the phone with you by chance?

ME: Problem is range - 4s, 3, laptop, blackberry, ipad are fine. Even with 2 bars of wifi signal the 5 has problems connecting, connects with extreme slowness and drops the connection and switches back to LTE. I do have the phone with me.

ME: Apple rep confirmed that diagnostics came back OK, but based on my troubleshooting that I should go into Apple Genius. I purchased this directly through AT&T, so thought I would check to see if this was a known issue with a small number of production HW devices.

ME: I have reset the network settings back to default - didn't help. Sometimes going into airplane mode and back helps for 5-10 minutes. Youtube, Netflix are unusable except within about 15 feet from router.

ATTREP: Thank you for that information, it really helps us a lot.   However this is due to the latest apple update, the apple technicians are aware of this.   You can definitely take it to an apple genius and they will be able to give you additional information.

ME: Ok. I was having the problem prior to the 6.1.3 update and hoped it might fix it. I don't want to go through the hassle of swapping out the HW if it is not going to help. If they think a fix is coming, I'm happy to wait. There just seems to be very little info coming from apple, just very active forums with countless people having essentially crippled wifi on iphone 5.

ATTREP: Yeah apple does not like to give much information away, that is why i am also limited with my tools and are unable to be of much assistance.  If they have recommended you to go to an apple genius then they may be able to provide more information for you and even fix the issue.

    ME: Will do. Thanks.
