Why is my macbook pro experiencing constant hangs and crashes

For the past week I have been experiencing intermittent hangs and crashes after the 10.8.3 update. I took it in store, after a few days testing they said they could not find anything wrong and that they were able to run multiple apps with no problems. Since i've had it back the problems have continued, even in safe mode and with a newly added user account. I trashed cache, java and flash which seemed to have made a difference; more responsive and any hangs didn't last long. After 30 mins of web browsing, the mechanical gear has shown up on my desktop and the cursor has disappeared. Could anyone suggest solutions to this problem?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)
