Q: Apple G5 OS X 10.4.11 will not join BTHub3

I have an old Apple Mac G5 running OS X 10.4.11.

I also have a recent wireless BT Home Hub BTHub3.

I haven't been using the Mac much recently but I am sure it used to join my home network automatically.

Now, the G5 won't even see my BTHub3-nnnn when I turn on the Mac.

All other devices in the house, including visitors, can see and access the network and the internet o.k. They include two iPhone, iPads, Windows laptop, Windows phone, etc.

Following power-on of the Mac, the AirPort icon in the bar at the top of the screen is completely grayed out, and clicking on it shows no wireless networks, or sometimes my BTHub3-nnnn but not ticked, available. It does, however, offer the option to turn AirPort Off. When I do that, and then click the AirPort icon and turn AirPort On again the AirPort icon then shows a full strength signal and clicking on it says that it is then connected to my BTHub3-nnnn. It appears to be telling the truth, I can access the Internet from Safari on the Mac.

How can I get it to do this automatically on power-up?

BT have tried a few ideas but do not support my old OS. They have confirmed, and all my other devices and visitors confirm, that the wireless and internet connections are otherwise o.k. The problem seems to be with the AirPort settings within OS X on my Mac.

I am also having trouble with iTunes. My Windows laptop has successfully updated to version 11.0.2.26 and whenever I Check for Updates it tells me "This version of iTunes (11.0.2) is the current version" but the Mac has the earlier 9.1.1 (12) and when I Check for Updates it tells me "The iTunes update server could not be contacted. Please check your Internet connection, or try again later." The internet connection from the BTHub is obviously fine. Is this a related problem? Should I ask this question in a separate iTunes thread?

iTunes 10.6.3 is the last version of iTunes to support Mac computers with Mac OS X 10.5.8 or PowerPC processors.

    iTunes 10.6.3 download:

I also use BT Home Hub 3 on a G5 iMac, but running Leopard. My suggestion would be to re-enter the details in your Network settings.

When I click on the Apple icon and Software Update it tells me that my existing software (OS X 10.4.11) is up to date and Software Update doesn't have any new software for my computer at this time.

Is 10.5.8, or Leopard, compatible with my machine? If it is, why does Software Update not tell me about it?

And why can I not contact the iTunes update server?

10.4.11 is Tiger, which is no longer supported by Apple and there will be no further updates.

To upgrade to Leopard (beyond which no PPC G5 Mac can go) would require you to buy a retail Leopard install disk from Amazon, as Apple no longer sells it, but even that will give you access to iCloud etc.

As this can cost around £150+ you may consider that it is time for a new Mac.

A new Mac is certainly on the cards, but I would have thought even the old one should still work.

Is this why I cannot update iTunes?
