Q: iMac 27inch Display - Dark on left side :(

I own a brand new 2011 27inch iMac.  It's been working great over the last two months.  However, yesterday the monitor seemed to dim and now the left side has darkened noticably.  It's exactly like this Youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDn4G_TTICY

Any ideas before I call the Apple Help Desk?

Thanks,

D.

Martyn, congratulations!  Very happy for you.  I just need to have them agree to doing mine now!  What did you say or do, to convince them?  Who did you speak to?

If the guarantee has already been expired then you can do the following.

In the lower left corner of the screen (from behind) there is a plug which does not have contact and that is why the backlight is not working. The plug is hidden under tape. I have opened the monitor (not so easy because of all the tape and glue which is used) and re-adjusted the plug. Don't worry, as you have to break some of the plastic. You can also soldering the cables directly. I have found that advice (with pictures and short films) in other support communities. But re-adjusting and fixing the plug using tape is faster and easier, because there is no broken cable or cold soldering as they were supposing.

Take a big magnifying glass and good light and you see that the contacts are lying side by side instead of on top of each other. No need to spend a lot of money for a new screen.

I don't know why this is. I can only imagine that the plastic was shrinking or expanding or something like that.

    Good luck to everybody!

@martinchivers so now that you realized what mikeh78 was asking for, are you going to provide us with the email that you used?? Its not agaisnt the rules for providing people with the same apple email address in which you recieved a reply from. (I emailed them over 4 months ago and they never replied back.)

OMG I just noticed this week the left side of my 27" iMac monitor is darker too!

Last week I noticed some flickering, but I had no idea what it could be.  Now by reading all the posts on this subject I can conclude there is a big prolem with these screens. (very dissapointed)

I bought mine through Best Buy December 2012, so it's only been a couple of months, but it was a floor model-(I got  huge discount.)

Thank God it is still within the one-year Apple warranty and I have additional insurance on it through Best Buy.

Let's see how this goes. Wish me luck.

Yes I bought a iMac 27 inch last June. By August the left side of my screen was noticeably darker. It took 3 customer service inquiries before they gave me three options. Wait and take it into the Mac store when it opened up in my town in two months. Take it to the Mac store that was 100 miles away. Or have a service technician come to my house. I took the third option. He showed up and was actually kind of surprised. He thought it was going to be the power supply affecting the back light. But it was not it was the actual LCD screen. He replaced it.

Mine is not that severe, but i fear that smallness should not be considered as ineligible for warranty.

I just wanted to add my two penneth to this blog, I do apple tech support for a living for private clients in London, two of my clients 27" imacs, have had this same issue occurr within one week of each other the backlight has gone on the left hand side of the screen in the exact same way and this is before even the 1 year warranty is up ! this might be described - a simple connector issue or a failure of the LCD backlight, but one thing to be assured of, this is not your fault as a user, there is nothing you could have done differently to prevent this, no LCD should need turning its brightness turning down to prevent this failure, fault tolerances should be designed in to avoid such failures.

No LCD should ever experience this kind of deteriation or failure in the natural course of events, this is either a flaw in design or manufacturing of the imac / lcd, dependant on where the issue lies, No other Commercial LCD screen i have ever owned has failed in this way, My Dell 24" is as good the day I bought it (except for a little CCFL yellowing) and is like 8 years old or more ? Apple are no doubt repairing this outside of  your warranty period, and so they should be, as they understand this is a flaw that they should be responsible for, this will no doubt turn into one of the silent warranty programs they have had to conduct over the years because, theyre products have not stood the test of time quality wise.

I could write a list of apple product flaws over the last 15 years longer than anyone would be interested in listening to, having conducted tech support over that period of time I still remember most of them,  please make sure when dealing with apple that you are firm and insistent, your consumer rights alone, independant of any minimal warranty cover apple provide you with cover you. For failure of this nature in the time frames we are talking about here is, unacceptable quality wise. To accept to pay apple extra money for repairs outside of their minimal warranty for this issue or to throw, in a most heinous fashion, such an imac into the waste chain for this failure, is a mistake, you should not have to pay or throw away, apple whether indirectly because of there component supplier or theyre own design issues are responsible for this failure. I happen to have the 3 year warranty on one of these 27" machines but if this happened to me outside of a 1 year warranty there is now way I would accept this sort of failure … regardless. Take apple to task, otherwise we will never have apple products that meet reasonable quality and lifespan standards.
