Can you export any of the affected photos? To the desktop, for instance? Or drag and drop to a Word Processor document? Do things work normally if, instead of drag and drop, you use the Media Browser in Mail?

Hello! Yes, I can drag them onto the desk top and they are fine, they don't morph into this empty locked attachment format like they do in the Mac Email program. Yes, I can drag and drop into Word no problem.
I've never used Media Broswer, I found the "photo browser" and that calls up a littl box with the thousands of pictures I have in Iphoto, when I select one and press enter though it doesn't attach, just gets bigger in the little box for the photo browser..
THis is so strange, it never gave me a problem before like this.. And it just does in randomly but frequently enough now that it intereferes with my emailing of photos!
Thanks for your help.

You drag them from the Photo Browser to the Mail message.
As you can drag from iPhoto normally to other apps this looks like a Mail issue.

Thank you Terrance. Any ideas how to resolve it within the Mail program?

No, tbh, I'd ask that on the Using Mac OS X forum for whatever version of the OS you have.
