Q: Has the AVG update been released yet for the missing library issue...

does anybody know?

I'm disabling AVG at present due to it constantly removing my library and playlists, it was rumoured to be released, well a hotfix, over the weekend, can anybody clarify?

I'm on the AVG free edition by the way

Cheers

I'm interested in this answer as well.  I tried renaming the .itl file and that worked maybe 3 hours and then poof gone again.  I'm running the 2013 Free version of AVG.  I was going to just copy all my music, uninstall and reinstall iTunes to see if that would resolve the problem but I really don't want to have to do that.

    Thanks.

Yes it has been released, not certain that it helps everyone affected with this issue. It may work if you have also excluded the iTunes library folder from all scanning activity. You may be better switching to Microsoft Security Essentials.

Thanks for the fast response.  I appreciate it.  I will look into MSE when I get home tonight.  I'm assuming it can do everything AVG does (automatic updates, set up automatic scans).  Would you suggest trying the rename of the .itl file again once I've uninstalled AVG? (Also, is there some way to just download all my music from the cloud - I don't usually use it and am a little green in terms of what it does) so that I don't have to reimport everything again?

    Thanks.

MSE should be a set & forget solution. Like any AV it may still miss newly released viruses so it is up to you to make sensible choices when browsing the web and backup your data against a disaster.

See this post for the iTunes library recovery strategy. A recent .tmp file may give better results than an older .itl file. You shouldn't need to download anything from the cloud as it should all still be on your computer.

I back everything up in multiple places so that won't be a problem.  I will try renaming the .tmp file to see if that works.  Thanks.

If you have a backup of the most recent working iTunes Library.itl file then just restore that.

The most recent .itl file I had was from back in February (which should be the file I used yesterday when it restored temporarily) but I believe I have a .tmp file from March 28.  Either way, the February library has everything except 1 album of 7 songs which I can download from the cloud easily enough (or reimport if need be).

The thing that gets me is because I'm operating a Windows machine, Apple support (customer service phone line) wouldn't help me.

It costs money to run live telephone support. It's limited to new purchasers of hardware or (I think) those that have paid for extended warrantys.

Just figured I'd update now that I"m home and have access to my machine.  I uninstalled AVG, restored my library and MSE is in the process of doing it's initial quick scan.  It looks like things are good now.

TT2, thank you for your help.

    Hi Cuzer and Sarah,

The AVG iTunes library bug was annoying, but AVG have fixed it.

I wouldn't recommend using MSE - its detection rate is bad and it didn't meet certification levels set by AV-Test (see here: http://www.av-test.org/en/tests/home-user/windows-8/janfeb-2013/)

    Matt.

Hi, last time I had feedback on this the patch from AVG still wasn't helping, and it would seem AVG wasn't obeying the folder exclusions either since that approach wasn't working either. Do you have a link to a more recent announcement from AVG?

    Hi Cuzer, Sarah, and Turing,

The patch was released last week in a standard update, and it was announced in our blog. However, some people are still reporting issues after the update and we are releasing another update today to make those corrections.

To be sure you receive the update, give it a go tomorrow and report back here with any questions or feedback.

Thanks Jon... I don't have the time to run personal tests, but I'll let anyone new that crops up with this issue know they should have another go at updating AVG before deciding what to do next.
