There are many Bluetooth protocols, and a fair number are not supported by iPhone. IPhone Bluetooth is primarily for connecting keyboards, headsets, and car audio systems. What are you trying to achieve? Does your Sony stereo claim iPhone compatibility?

Yes I checked the model on the website and claims that it connects to iPhone 4S.
I bought the car stereo from my best mate and he says that he's never been able to connect his iPhone to it.
Surely it should find the device even if it doesn't want to connect to it?
I have emailed sony aswell and awaiting their response as I want to know why it isn't claiming to do what they say, but then I'm sure that they will pass it on as iPhones problem.

I have the same stereo... connecting the first time is a bit tricky.
READ THE MANUAL FOR THE STEREO.
It tells you how to make the stereo discoverable and pair it with your phone.
After it's been paired once, it remembers.
When I get into my car and start the engine, it will usually pair automatically now.
If not, hitting "Pause" on the stereo once or twice will usually make it pair up and start playing music from itunes.
The only thing that ***** about that stereo is that BT Pandora doesnt have the thumbsup/down option for iPhone(Does for Android tho!)

I will take a read at the manual but I hold down the bt button for 5 seconds until the Bluetooth sign comes on the stereo and then go to Bluetooth on iPhone and it doesn't pick it up. Thanks for the manual though and will take a look to make sure I'm doing it right

I read the manual and I wasn't holding the bt button down until it flashed. I never had the manual and as a man, I will always try on my own first. Lol.

Yep! I'm loving the stereo. It's so nice being able to play music and have it pause if I get a phone call! Then it fades back in after the call is over. Njoy!
