Every single time that i close itunes, my library disappears! And then when i get the library back into itunes, i have over 800 duplicated songs, my playlists are gone, and it's becoming a huge hassle! I have over 2000 songs, so it takes forever for all of that music to load back into itunes. How can i fix this?!?!

I have the same problem. The "iTunes Music Library.xml" file keeps reverting to a very small size (12KB) each time I reboot the computer. Then I need to follow the process for recreating my library by deleting the ".itl" file and importing the ".xml" file from my backup disk. Fortunately, I backup this file each time I logoff. This is more than annoying. It takes considerable time to go through the import process. Also, there are a great many ".tmp" files in the iTunes folder when this happens. When the Library is reinstalled, there are a number of duplicates of the standard playlists. I also lose most of my rating. If I didn't have so much time invested in iTunes, I would never use it.

More or less the same problem I have. I have recreated my library about 3 times and each time I log onto it after recreating it, it's vanished and have to start all over again. My songs are all backed up but its such a pain having to recreate. I've been to 2 Apple stores and they have no answer for me, so this is my next port of call. I'm thinking have I got a bug on this software possibly? Any answers would be helpful.

It's your Sony Vaio. Sony has put some media software on your laptop at the factory, and once you run that software it attacks the itunes library database file.
You need to get the fix from Sony:

This has been a problem for years for Vaio owners worldwide. Have a lookat this thread from 2008:

    Hello,

I don't have a SONY VAIO and my iTunes library deletes every time I close iTunes. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm on a custom built PC running Windows 7 and I just had the same problem. My library was absolutely fine last night. I wake up this morning after Windows installed some automatic updates and my library is GONE but all the music folders are still intact.

    WHAT THE ****.

I don't have a Sony Vaio either, and I have the same problem whether I'm on my HP laptop running Vista, or my HP desktop running Windows 7. I keep my Music files out of iTunes. And virtually everytime I close iTunes and reopen, the Music Library is missing. My solution is to close iTunes and copy the .itl and .xml files to my desktop. (I also backup my hard drive each time before shutting down.) Then when I reboot the computer and the Library is empty, I copy the .itl and .xml files back into the iTunes folder. It's a royal pain, but this is better than having to reconstruct your library each time. So far, I have been unable to find anything that explains why I have this problem.

I have the same issue (custom-built Windows XP). My iTunes worked perfectly last night with almost 5,000 songs; and today, when I brought it up, it has half that and iTunes has reverted in format to an older view and set-up, i.e., most custom playlists are gone, Genius lists/option is off, etc. In fact, when I bring it up, it prompts me with the set-up assistant and wants to add artwork. I did a system restore to two days ago and set back my Kaspersky database thinking that may have been the issue. Nope. Nada. I'm petrified to sync my iPhone now. I haven't had to dive into the inner-workings of iTunes lately so I'm sketchy on the song locations, etc; but I guess it'll have to be done soon.

What happened in 24 hours? *scratches head*

It should be clear to apple by now that this is clearly a software issue.  I do not own a sony.  I have been dealing with this issue for a week now.  Apple likes to come off as a company for the people but when it comes to helping you out with their faulty software they sure are good at giving the run around.  This whole website even is practically a labyrinth, with no easy navigation between logging in and replying to a forum that happens to be talking about the issue i have.  Also, where are the support people who should be helping us through this?? ******* LAME

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash

Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.

In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.

    RestorePrevious.png

Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to a recent state.

See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.

When you get it all working make a backup!

Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor to most since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems in some cases it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any AV scanning process.

I am having this same problem with the most current version 11.0.2.26. It doesn't happen every time I shut down my computer, but it keeps deleting all of my playlists, half of my music file, my podcasts and apps. I should not have to back up my itunes everytime I close it, that is unacceptable. I am running Windows 7, and I don't have a Sony, so that has nothing to do with it. However, clearly this is an itunes software issue, as I only had this problem after I upgraded it. Apple can you please fix this issue!?  I am about ready to give up itunes altogether at this point.

Or does anyone else have a recommendation? I do not have a previous itunes library file that is recent, so I cannot just replace that file, as turningtest2 suggests.

Do you have AVG? If so I recommend switching to Microsoft Security Essentials or another AV of your choice. I appreciate that your most recent previous library will be somewhat out of date which is why you should attempt to find a workable .tmp file to copy and rename. If you need to go back to the last library file then you can always add the media folder to the library to import any recent additions. This will be better than simply importing all media into a completely blank library.

This event is an object lesson in precisely why you should maintain a backup taken when your system is working properly so that when something goes wrong or your hard drive fails, you can recover your data easily.

I appreciate your response, but I think you are missing a bit of the problem. Every time I close itunes and then reopen it, it loses all my data and settings. I have backed it up, but I should not have to reinstall the backup every time I open itunes. I'm sure you'd agree that having to "fix" itunes every time I open it is unacceptable. I do have AVG, and I have made exceptions for itunes, but that still does not solve the problem. From all appearances, this does not appear to be an issue with AVG.

Any other recommendations? Thanks for your time and response.

Also, I'm not sure if this is anything of note, but every time I open itunes, I also have to turn on genius again and it has to go through the whole process again.

AVG have today released a second patch aimed at preventing this problem. I think the fact that they've publicly acknowledged the issue makes my case. AVG is/was the cause of the problem. Exclusions weren't helping. Hopefully if you patch AVG with the latest updates, then you can restore your library one last time, after which it should stop happening.

I'd still go with that backup...
