I have deleted a large number of files to free space.  However, the space is not free.  I see a large amount in BACKUP in "About This MAC - Storage".  How do I get rid of it?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities

Read > http://pondini.org/TM/30.html At the bottom of that page you can find the steps to access to the volume which local snapshots are stored. Just turn off local snapshots and delete them after accessing to the volume. However, Time Machine will automatically remove local snapshots when the hard disk gets full, so there's no need to turn them off
