I'm having the same problem
I picked up and iphone 5s from tmobile and I live in an excellent service area but my iphone only picks up 1-2 bars and switches from LTE 4G and E
I'm a new customer and I just joined last Friday on October 18
I read a forum where it could be the carrier update because some people said they updated and then their signal dropped and that's when they started having issues
So maybe tmobile will come out with bother carrier update to fix this issue

Have you reset your network settings?
1. Google maps is more reliable
2. What is the number value behind your signal?
-47 to -100 is considered a normal range
anything below -100 is weak signal

I already have my first phone did the same thing so I got it exchanged at the tmobile store and this one does the same thing I called tmobile and they are telling me they are investigating my case cause she says I'm suppose to be showing full bars because I live in a full coverage area
