I tried this before, but I just got it to come up with the connect to itunes to restore message again and i connected it to my laptop and got an image of a circle with a line through it, a message saying do not disconnect and the battery charging icon in the top left (though it looks different to normal). However my laptop still would not recognise it and went back to the sad ipod face after about 5mins.
Also I dont really live anywhere near an apple store and can't really afford to send it off anyway, it would probably end up cheaper to get a new one. Thanks a lot for your help! Any other ideas would really be appreciated, however unusual....

Thanks for your help , I think I will just have to invest in a new one, I don't think it's really worth sending it off. I am guessing that there is also no way of me getting any of my music back .......
