Jan 25, 2013 4:37 PM in response to larimerguyby den.thed,Apple's > HP Printer Driver 1.1.1 clearly supports both the 1200 and 1300 series HP Laserjet printers.
Please follow "How to add a printer" at > Mac Basics: Printing (OS X Lion)

Apr 11, 2013 12:31 PM in response to den.thedby rickk149,When I connect the printer to my OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion machine, it attempts to download a driver then reports "The software is currently unavailable. You can check for the software later by choosing Software Update from the Apple menu."
I have tried several times over the past month with the same failed result every time.
No other information, no hints, no nothing. Thanks.

Apr 11, 2013 4:19 PM in response to rickk149by Shane_R@HP,Run Apple Software Update before you install the printer. This will update the list of supported printers in the Mac. If it finds updates, go ahead and run them. If it comes back blank, just close the window. Now try to install the printer. Let me know what happens.

Apr 11, 2013 6:25 PM in response to Shane_R@HPby rickk149,My machine was already fully up to date.
It recognizes the printer and asks by its name about installing it. It searches for drivers then reports the failure message I quoted earlier.
I then found this other discussion thread and tried what it said:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4420777?start=0&tstart=0
I resentfully downloaded and installed the enormous 450MB driver package from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907
I tried both the plug-it-in-and-let-it try method, and the going through System Preferences to manually add the printer method.
Same result every time. It recognizes the printer, just refuses to install it.

Apr 12, 2013 10:54 AM in response to rickk149by Shane_R@HP,What printer are you using? I just noticed that you never said what printer you have. I am assuming that you have the same printers as the original poster. Is that correct? I want to make sure I'm giving you instructions for the right printer.

Apr 12, 2013 12:36 PM in response to Shane_R@HPby rickk149,Yes, I am working with an old HP 1200, OS is 10.8.3, latest updates applied. This is a MacBook Pro, not a Mac Mini... didn't notice the discussion thread category when I first wrote here.

Apr 12, 2013 12:59 PM in response to rickk149by Shane_R@HP,I think I see the problem. According to the HP support page for the Laserjet 1200 printer series, this printer isn't supported above 10.6. If it was there would be a link that would take you to the install instructions for the printer. It sounds like the Mac is able to recognize the printer, but there are no driver for this OS. I'm very sorry. I should have checked that first.

Apr 13, 2013 12:29 PM in response to Shane_R@HPby ShlomiL,Hi,
The HP Laserjet 1200 do compatible with Mountain Lion:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=c01664444 #N2471
Try removing any instalnce of the drivers and then check for Software Update:
- Go to Computer > Macintosh-HD > Library > Printers and move the HP folder to the trash.
- Browse into PPDs > Contents > Resources. search for 1200 within the folder. move the drivers to the trash and restart your Mac.
- Next go to Print & Scan and reset the printing System:

Finally try connecting the printer again and check for any difference.
