Try going into your ~library/preference and move this file (com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.trackpad.plist) to the trash, then give it a try. Note: To get to your library you will need to be in the finder, then hold down the option key while clicking go menu item.

I don't have a file by that name.
However, I have kept my MBP shut down for 10 hours now & the trackpad seems to be working just fine. But I'm wary that it shall go back to its erratic behaviour again.

Also pressing the trackpad with my palm as suggested in a few posts makes the trackpad work for a while.
Also, after reading a couple of posts, I do see that my MBP is getting heated up too soon from the entire left side which is the region for Battery, USB, Ethernet & other ports...

Its working absolutely fine now. I resetted the SMC & PRAM, quit using Mozilla Firefox. Kept the MBP shut for a good 7-8 hours. When it cooled down, I turned it upside down, gave it a little shake & since I turned it on its working just like new.
