Q: Upgrade

I have an older macbook air running 10.5.8 with a 1.6 intel core 2 duo processor and 2 gigs of memory.  I have been running leopard for quite a while with no problems.  Should I upgrade to Snow Leopard and/or Mountain Lion?  I do routine things - email, web surfing, microsoft office.

You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.

 

After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.

 

     Snow Leopard General Requirements

 

       1. Mac computer with an Intel processor

       2. 1GB of memory

       3. 5GB of available disk space

       4. DVD drive for installation

       5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;

           fees may apply.

       6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and

           terms apply.

    If you want, continue using Mac OS X 10.5.8, although it's unsupported. However, your best option is to upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. You can buy it at the Apple Online Store > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

     

    Then, make a backup of your data and upgrade to Snow Leopard. You need an external optical drive to upgrade to Snow Leopard, or you can use Install Remote Mac OS X if you have another Mac or PC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2129

     

    After upgrading to Snow Leopard, open  > Software Update, and install Mac OS X 10.6.8. I don't recommend to upgrade to OS X Lion because you will have performance problems. The hardware of your computer is very old
