If the photos were placed there by saving from a download like email, tap the photo and then the square with an arrow and the trash or delete. If the photos were placed there by syncing, then you must sync back to iTunes, delete the photos and sync back to the iPad.

There are some photos which were downloaded and others were some that appeared when I opened the app!
In all cases when the photos are selected, the square with the arrow only shows was to share the photo; there is no trash or delete that appears.

Preloads you cannot remove. If the others can be deleted a red Delete will be on the left side of the top bar after tapping the square with the curved arrow. If it is greed, they have to removed via iTunes syncing.

Photos that have not been edited in iPhoto are not deleted in iPhoto for iOS because iPhoto for iOS uses photos stored in the Photos app.
