    I have been following this thread for quite sometime. I finally got my screen replace with a Samsung one by an Apple reseller and not through the Apple store. I live on Vancouver Island and I brought my Macbook to two different places those being London Drugs in Campbell River which didn't help me and Mac Boutique in Nanaimo which is out of business now. Both places did their behind the scenes diagnosis and said everything was fine and told me to go to an Apple store.

     

    I went down to Victoria BC and stopped off at a place called SOHO computers and spoke with an Apple tech named Simon. Simon also owns a Retina Macbook Pro and had the same problem so he knew what I was talking about. He replaced my screen and showed me via running terminal I had a Samsung display. I would highly recommend anyone on Vancouver Island to check SOHO computers on Douglas street!!

    I'm on my 4th MacBook Pro Retina. The first one i got was Samsung display and was perfect, but it was only 2.3 with 8GB Ram and 256GB HD so i decided to upgrage to the 2.6 with 16GB RAM and 512GB... what a mistake, every laptop i've gotten since has been plagued to varying degrees by ghosting, the second one was actually worse where ghosting showed up at just 40Sec of being on screen. The one I have now is somewhat okay but seems to be getting worse, started off at almost 8min before it showed sign's of ghosting but now it'll do even at 3-4min of having something stay on the screen. Needless to say this one is going back for one last try at getting a properly working machine after which i may either just give up on apple refurbs and buy a new machine or just scrap the retina all together for now and just get a cheepo macbook air....

     

     

    oddly enough i checked about 5-6 Macbook Pro Retina's in the apple store and they were ALL samsung. I feel like i'm being cheated where they are showing us one product and then handing another one to us in a box.

    I'm about to be in the same boat. I have a refurb 2.3/8gb/256 and the screen is perfect (Samsung) and I saw a refurb 2.6/16gb/512 was available so I pulled the trigger.  It comes tomorrow. I'm planning to compare the screens and hopefully keep the 2.6.  If it has issues ill keep the 2.3.  Was your 2.6 refurb with problems a Samsung?

    No so far the 3 2.6's have all been LG first gen screens. None had a Samsung. They all had ghosting problems, first thing i would do is check to see if its LG or Samsung. If its LG then do the burn-in test and see how bad it is, I was planning on keeping this 2.6 LG screen when i first go it cause it wouldn't show signs of burnin till 8min or so which was more then i would every actually keep up a single screen, but with just 1 weeks of medium use (6-8hrs a day) the screen burn is now happening at 4-5min, which scares me at the fact that this screen could also get as bad as the 45sec burn in i had earlier.

    Dang. Well I'm not too hopeful then.  If I strike gold tomorrow with a 2.6 Samsung ill let you know. Otherwise it's going back and ill keep my 2.3.  I think the battery isn't lasting like it should on my 2.3 though. I'm getting like 3 hours.

     

    Are the gen2 LG screens supposed to be problem free now?

    Retina Macbook Pro (early 2013)

    2.6

    16 Gb ram

    256 Gb ssd

     

     

    I got it through the Education Store, I'm an electrical engineering researcher here at Virginia Tech.

     

    I'll update the display status tonight once I can get my hands on it. Can wait to know if I have won the lottery.Hope me good luck guys!

    i think the crappy screen problem is only plaguing the mid 2012 models, i haven't read about anyone now with the early 2013's getting stuck with the first generation LG screen.

    Well I got my second mbp 15 today.  my first is a refurb samsung 2.3/8/256 and no problems.  the new one is a refurb 2.6/16/512 has an LG SJA1, and i just ran the 10 min retention test at http://www.mitchmalone.name/retina-test/ and it did not show any retention.

     

    I would prefer to keep the more powerful 2.6, but i don't want to have problems with the screen later.  The closest apple store is 2 hours away.  Which would you keep?  The 2.3 Samsung or the 2.6 LG?

    I went to the Apple store this morning and asked about any recent news around MBP Retina screen problems.  The first guy I talked to said this was no longer an issue and that Apple resolved the problem by using screens from only one supplier.  He didn't know who that supplier was, but he was very helpful and went out of his way to hunt down another guy on the floor with a deeper knowledge of the issue.  The 2nd guy said the same thing: no more screen problems and Apple is using a "single supplier" that neither guy claimed to know by name.

     

    I didn't mention the Ripley thing.

     

    So I bought a MPR 15" with Retina. I got home and checked, and the screen appears to be a Samsung, if I am reading the output of that command correctly.  This is by far the most splendid and spectacular laptop I have ever owned.  I was nervous that Xcode development would be painful on a laptop, but it's perfectly fine.

     

    On another note, Best Buy was offering the same model for $120 less.  I mentioned this to the 2nd guy at the Apple store and he said they would match the price.  No hassle, no lengthy negotiation, he just went to the Best Buy web site to confirm the price difference and then he took $120 off the total without so much as batting an eye.  He also said it was better to get AppleCare when I buy the laptop because if I got it later I would have to pay state sales tax.  If I bought it with the laptop, it was treated differently (in my state) and avoided sales tax.

     

    All in all, a truly superior laptop (so far) and a very pleasant buying experience.  The only nuisance was that I had to to bring my own bag.  (Merchants in San Francisco are prohibited by law from giving out free shopping bags, $500 fine if they are caught.)

    I'm in the same boat, just recieved the replacement MacBook Retina and same thing. LG first generation screen, and its ghosting at just 4min. I think i'm just going to return the retina's for now and just wait it out till the next generation comes out in July (only 2-3mo). I would go with the 2.3 but I really need the 512 since i dual boot my mac and 256 just isn't enough to keep anything on your laptop if you do that. for the price difference (1779 vs 2289) i would much rather get the 2.6/16/512 for what i need. I do some hobby DSLR photo work and home video conversions so the RAM and processor are very helpfull with that.

     

    Its really up to you. If you don't need the extra 8GB Ram and the 256GB HD than i woould just stick with the 2.3. My other option is to use the old one and drop the new one off at Apple in an attempt that they will replace the screen only with a Samsung one and then just keep that. But i hate the thought of having to have a "new" machine repaired on so early in its life, bound to run into some problems later on. I don't quite know what to do anymore, i'm tired of running through replacements in an attempt to get a refurb that doesn't ghost under 5min or doesn't get worse with time.

    I'm glad to hear you had such a positive experience.  Bizarre to get the "they're using a single supplier" response from the genius boys.  There doesn't seem to be a unified Apple statement to the screen nightmare, with some saying "what screen problem" to "yeah, both venders have the IR which is normal for IPS screens."

     

    Anyway, you referenced "the Ripley thing." What exactly is that? Someone's online screen test?  I only know the film The Talented Mr. Ripley or Sigourney Weaver's character Ripley in the Alien movies.
