I want to use an external microphone (mini jack) with my MacBook Pro. Where does it plug into?

Plug into the stereo mini jack port, but for a mono (1 channel, 1 ground, two sections plug) microphone you need a mono to stereo adapter as the port has two channels (three sections, 2 channels and a common ground)

This way when you input the sound is recorded into the left and right channels equally, also the mono jack won't work in stereo because the sections cross the stereo ground contacts.

I'm trying to use a SoundTech CM-1000 conference mic to record sessions at a conference I am running.

The mike refuses to pick up sound when connected to the Audio-in plug on my MAcBook Pro.

Not sure if the SoundTech CM-1000 has a mono or stereo input jack.  Does that matter in simply getting it to work in the first place?

Does my MacBook Pro require external mics that are also powered - connected via a usb port rather than, or at least in addition to, the audio-in plug, for instance?

    What's happening here?

The SoundTech CM-1000 has a 3.5mm stereo jack, it should work in the MBP, have you set the socket to be an input? (system preferences>sound>input)?

My version of Mountain lion notices that my MaBook Pro has both an audio input jack and an audio out jack.  Of course I'm trying to connect the SoundTech CM-1000 via the audio INPUT jack.  And the Sound Preferences under the Input tab is set for "line in".

Elsewhere, I'm picking up that a Mac can't operate an external mic that's not powered.  Could that be the problem?  That the seemingly simple SoundTech CM-1000 is not powered - could that be the problem?

Have you actually plugged the mic into something else to ensure that it dows work, because it should work with your Mac.

Thanks, but yes I have.  It works.

You know nothing about a MacBookPro requiring an input source (mic) utilizing the Input audio jack to be a powered source?

Why not exchange it for the USB version, the extra versatilty will be handy and it's only $10 more.

On a Windows PC you can normally check a box to enable "microphone boost" for the input jack. A Mac expects a line level input. I have a nice little Sony stereo mic and am currently wondering if there is a cost-effective way of using it to record audio on my MacBook.
