How do I uninstall FCE (v 4.0.1) from old iMac (OS 10.6.8 2GHz Intel Core Duo)?

Can I re-install on new iMac I plan to buy with Mountain Lion?  I have install FCE CD.

To uninstall FCE, just drag the Final Cut Express application to the trash.  Then empty the trash.

To uninstall MS Office, drag the entire MS Office 2011 folder to the trash. Then empty the trash.

To reinstall them on your new Mac, just use the install DVDs for each application.

    Notes:

    • FCE was discontinued nearly 2 years ago and is not supported on Lion or Mt. Lion.   Some users have been able to install FCE on Lion & Mt. Lion but many have not.  And even among those who have, there have been issues with how well FCE runs.   On a new Mac with Mt. Lion it would be far better to make the jump to Final Cut Pro X.
    • Because MS Office necessitates a license activation, and you had already activated it on your current Mac, when you install the same copy on your new Mac, you may need to contact MS to activate the license on your new Mac (it may not activate automatically on the new Mac).

Excuse me joining in Michael and Martin, but I'd like to pick up on your recommendation, Martin, to use FCPX.

My main concern about switching from FCE4 (apart for the new learning) would be sharing the results.  I see that  in FCPX DVD is an option for sharing a project.  Can one export a completed movie using iDVD to burn DVDs as I do now ?  I like to share DVDs with my family and a few select friends.

    thanks, Keith

The issues with producing DVDs with newer Macs with FCPX are not about FCPX, but the following:

    1. iDVD is no longer available, and
    2. new Macs no longer come with a CD/DVD drive (well, the regular MBP still does, but iMac and the Retina MBP do not)

FCPX has a very basic DVD burning capability.  Additional solutions include buying Roxio Toast, Compressor, Adobe Encore or other DVD authoring software  They all require you to have a DVD burner which of course is yet another purchase if your Mac doesn't have one.   iDVD was a much better DVD authoring tool overall.  Note: there is a way to migrate iDVD from an earlier Mac to a new Mac; if you need to know how, you can do a search, or ask here and I'll reply.

Thanks Martin, that's interesting.  It's good to know that burning DVDs is still workable, and likely to be for a while yet.

I have an iMac 27 from late 2011 which has a built-in burner.  Also I still have (and use) iDVD, so that's still viable.  I think I'll stay with FCE4 as long as I can as I have learned how to do most things I need to with it, and keep FCPX as an option later.  I apprexciate your responses to questions, and all the other active forum members.  Best wishes, Keith

    Keith,

I actually do what you are asking about.

FCP X exports Master Files that are dropped into iDVD with no problems.

While the quality of the direct burning in FCP X is good the customizing is simplistic.

    Martin, Keith, Alchroma:

    Thanks to you all.

Martin, re:un-install FCE; I did this once before (2 or 3 years??) and dragging to the trash didn't get all the many files.  I just got a response from another Mac owner in the discussion group who said I should you FCS Remover.

I couldn't remember from my earlier experience what the software was that worked, but I found FCS Remover on my Mac in Applications, so that's what I plan to try.

Also, Martin, you said I should contact Microsoft to tell them I'm abandoning Office on the old computer and want to use it on the new computer.  How do you contact MS?  I have been able to get answers from Apple fairly easily via discussion groups or tech support, but my few efforts to get thru to MS have been nightmares!  Any suggestions?

And I was surprised to learn the new iMacs don't have a DVD burner which I use all the time on this iMac and my newer Macbook Pro.  I suppose that's why the prices start at $1299?  I will look, but does the Apple store sell DVD burners?  And assuming so, do any of you have recs?

Lastly, it has taken me about 4 years to master FCE.  I am willing to go to FCP X if those here can advise me about 1)how tough is the learning curve if you're good at FCE and 2) is it a better program?

Thanks for the past comments and I look forward to your replies.

    thanks Al, that's interesting.

Michael, I read that there is some significant re-learning to use FCPX as it is structured very diffrently from FCE.  Evidently, familairity with iMovie 11 is an asset.  Others would know more though.  I think our Apple store sells the separate burner for $79, which seemed reasonable to me. That will do the job removing all the FCE related files.

As Keith mentions Apple sells one as an optional extra.

There are others on the market as well.

My experience is to do some serious homework before buying any unit to make sure it is compatible with your specific Mac. Some users have been very disappointed.

I use an OWC (Other World Computing) bluray burner with several types of connections and it works fine.

    Question 1.

Totally different to FCE and you need to forget most of what you learnt there to adapt to FCP X.

Most dramas occur learning FCP X because users try to think and use FCP X the the old way.

It took me some adjusting to get into the new methods and thinking and terms used.

Advice: Read the manual and unlearn FCE. Search the FCP X forum or ask a specific question, the info there is mounting.

    Question 2.

    Better is a subjective term.

I have sold all my old legacy FCP stuff and moved on to FCP X.

As a broad statement it makes it easier for someone who knows little about editing and the quirks of codecs to Import and Edit a Project.

That being said the underlying complexity of the app is very powerful.

Like all apps it's not perfect, the current version is 10.0.8 and I made the shift at 10.0.7 when it had matured to the extent I was personnaly happy to make the jump.

said I should you FCS Remover

That's fine.   What FCS Remover deletes (beyond the actual FCE application) is various preference and support files that occupy little disk space and won't cause any problems if they stay in place.

you said I should contact Microsoft to tell them I'm abandoning Office on the old computer and want to use it on the new computer.

No, what I actually said was that you may need to contact MS after you install the same copy of MS Office on your new computer.  After you delete MS Office from your old Mac, just go ahead and install it on your new Mac.  If the authorization process believes (detects) that you have already authorized this license on your old Mac, it will tell you so and should indicate how to contact MS.  Here is some additional info from the MS support site (http://www.microsoft.com/mac/faq):

If the Microsoft Office Setup Assistant cannot activate Office for Mac by using the Internet and you see a message that online activation was unsuccessful, click Activate By Phone. To activate the product by telephone, find your location in the pop-up menu and call one of the phone numbers provided. Telephone activation might take longer than activation through the Internet.

And here is a link to the MS Knowledgebase Article about activating MS Office.

does the Apple store sell DVD burners?

Yes, and I suggest the Apple USB SuperDrive (currently $79)

Thanks re: re-using MS Office.  I had planned to install on the new computer after un-installing on the old one.

I did that one time years ago and MS would not active Office on the new computer.

I will follow you advice on contacting MS if necessary.

    Thanks re: DVD burner.
