Q: error 1434 ipod classic

I assume you have seen this article regarding this error message.

iPod: Cannot restore or update in iTunes with error 1415, 1417, 1418, 1428, 1429, 1430, 1436, or 1439

It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

I've also just run into an issue where I couldn't restore an iPod with a corrupt file system, and the "super fix" in that linked article wasn't working for me. I've run across a potentially useful workaround.

iPod Classic went on the fritz today just after syncing. Couldn't restore via iTunes, kept getting 1439 errors, Windows wouldn't format as FAT32, claimed the "Volume is too big for FAT32". Finally tracked down EaseUS Partition Master Home Edition (Free) and formatted as FAT32 with 128k clusters. The iPod is filling back up again. Might be worth a shot here...

My ipod classic crashed on its own and I lost all of my music. After connecting and trying to restore it through iTunes, I got an Error 1434 message, it would not recognize the device.

I opened disk utility, slected ipod and erased the disk. It gave me a warning that if I erase the disk I might be able to use all of my iPod's features (ha, it was basically a dead device that didn't work anyway). After erasing the disk and leaving it plugged in to my laptop, I hit restore in iTunes and it seemed to do the trick. It recognized the drive, installed the OS and is reloading all my music.

Error 1434 also, but when tried to erase in disk utility error message appeared saying erase failed: cannot write last block.. Any suggestions??

Try restoring after putting the device in DFU mode. Connect the device to the cable and have iTunes running. Press Menu & Select like a normal reset but keep holding for 12 seconds. The device should reset as normal and then the screen should go black. iTunes should detect it and offer to restore.
