My HP C6280 All in One, works without problem with Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I had some problems at one time so I phoned HP help and they explained what current drivers were needed, how to get them and gave me a contact point if I got into trouble. Good service.
Your model is newer than mine so it would be worth talking to them.

Have you tried restoring the printer itself with a 'factory reset' and starting over?
If that's a no-go, I remember a thread here recently where a user was having all kinds of trouble getting an HP printer to work, albeit on Mountain Lion and it was a brand new model (not sure which).
In the end the solution was to delete the HP folder from Macintosh HD>Library>Printers, restart and connect the printer as if new. That triggered the printer into going to Apple's support pages and installing the software. After that all was well.
If you do try this, maybe just drag the HP printer folder to the desktop so that you can re-instate it to its original location if it doesn't reslove the problem. If it does, trash the HP folder on your desktop.

I have just phoned HP Support who have now confirmed that HP no longer support this printer.
The D7260 is now 4 years old and will no longer be supported.
There is therefore no fix available for this problem.

I think the HP guy may have been smoking wacky weed. This HP support site:
shows drivers available for Mac OS 10.4 through OS 10.8

HP discontinued support for a lot of their older printers when OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) was released.
Fortunately, most of the legacy HP printers are still supported by the HPIJS project. Just download the software (three components - Ghostscript, FoomaticRIP and the HPIJS driver). Install all three components, it doesn't matter in what order). Should work fine. Your D7260 is in the list of supported printers. I have the HPIJS drivers installed on Snow Leopard, Lion & Mt. Lion and my old HP printers work fine.
