I have several old movies in a 4:3 aspect ratio.  What sort of effect does choosing 16:9 in iDVD have on those?  Can I have a widescreen menu and standard movies?  I would hope that the movies would maintain their ratio and have black on left/right sides to fill the space rather than get stretched.

Considering that most TVs are widescreen now, is it best to try to create "widescreen" versions of the movies right from the start in FCPX?

    Good afternoon,

I've not tried to mix aspect ratios, but in your case, what's the downside to making the menu match the 4:3 movies?  But, no harm in experimenting if you want to see how your version of iDVD handles mixed aspect ratios.

More generally, I'd try to match my DVD with the original content.  Here are  other thoughts on the matter:

Basically you'll end up with shadowboxing of the movie, black areas on each side of the movie on the screen. Of course if the DVD player or digital TV set has aspect ratio selections you can expand it to fill the screen but it will be a bit stretched in one way or another.
