Can someone please explain to me what universal  format works across all of Apple?

I want ONE format that will work on OSX Lion,  iDVD 7.1.2, and will load via iTunes onto iPod touch and iPad.  (and with good quality)

I thought it would be .M4V,  because iDVD accepts that to burn onto DVDs, but nope, .M4V wont load into an iPod Touch via iTunes.

Please FGS dont tell me there isnt a universal format.

Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

    Hi Ross,

Not sure what problem is causing trouble with iTunes and the iTouch, but Apple says .m4v is fine.

Universal, high quality, small file size is the holy grail of the video industry, and there are lots of innovations in that field.

Perhaps check over in the iPod/iTunes forums -- they may be able to diagnois the problem.  Do you have enough memory for the slideshow?  Are you looking in the movie/video section of the iPod?  Could the slideshow be too tall and wide (this is measured in pixels, and 640x480 pixels looks to be the largest)?
