Mac Mini on Mountain Lion, and I have two external drives on a dasiy chain with firewire 800.  Each drive has it's own power supply.  The mac mini seems to drop the second drive on the chain shortly after it enters sleep mode.

Hi, did you maybe install some drivers for one or more of these?

No drivers installed on the Mac mini.  Just plugged in the G-Technology drives via firewire 800 and they both poped up on the screen and worked.

Next time I look the mac mini say the drives were disconnected in appropriatly.  This seems to happen shortly after Mac Mini goes to sleep.

OK, just checking, not an easy one then.

Does it do it if  either one is connected first position?

Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

Have seen problems with TB->FW Daisychaining.

It only drops the second one in line regardless of order.  It is FW800 -> FW800.

OK, I was afraid of that, does it disappear from Disk Utility also?

It is dropped from everything.  Only solution so far is I placed Mac Mini in never sleep mode.

I personally think Apple messed up big time with TB/FW, only thig I can think of is unloadeding & reloading the FW kext after sleep.

    Hi, OzziesMAC.

    A few Ideas.

Depending on the type or brand of drive an external HDD takes a few seconds to wake up from sleep.

Is the second drive in the chain active or still asleep when the machine wakes up?

Another possibility is that because the first drive takes a few seconds to wake, the port for the second drive is inactive so the Mac won't find it straight away. However, this shouldn't be a problem once the first drive in the chain is active and appears on the desktop. The second shouild also appear.

The Mac drops the second drive when it enters sleep because the port on the first drive becomes inactive.

When you wake the Mac and its found the first drive in the chain, you could try unplugging and replugging the cable from the second drive into the port on the first. Boring, but the Mac might find it again.

I don't know if any of the above will help, but I hope it helps you find a solution.

    Regards,

I do not have a problem getting it back online, that has never been an issue.  All I have to do is power it off then back on and then it re-appaers.  The problem is that it is being dismounted overnight every night sometime after it enter sleep mode.

They are both asleep when I wake the mac mini up, the difference is the first drive in the FW chain is still mounted and waiting for wake up but the second drive has been improperly dismounted.

The only solution so far has been not to let the mac mini enter sleep mode.
