Q: iPhone stuck in "headphones" mode

Earlier I accidentally grabbed my iPod headphones instead of my iPhone headphones and I think I may have jammed them in there too far. Because now I can't hear any of the keyboard clicks or sounds and when I receive a text message there's no sound either. And when I receive a call it won't allow me to hear the person on the other line unless I put my headphones in or use the speaker function. And when I turn the ringer volume up/down it says "headphones" in parentheses as if it's been set to "headphones" mode or something! Is it possible that I jammed them in so far that my iPhone thinks my headphones are still plugged in? Did I just totally ruin my iPhone? What do I do? Anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks!

Ya, i'm no expert by any means, that is just what worked for me, I had no sound at all, other than my ringer working thankfully, but if it is acting glitchy or erratic like you describe, it could be something Apple should look at, a piece of newspaper can't hurt but I wouldn't mess around too much.

Do the newspaper thing, and then the compressed air.

I used an air can and blew directly into the headphone port and it worked.

This is because those sounds come from the internal speaker even if you have headphones plugged in. The phone simply thinks phones are plugged in and is sending the other audio to the headphone jack even though there's nothing plugged in. Sound effects like alarms, text tones and the ringer always come out of the main speaker no matter what.

I am having this problem now too today but I think it's because I got water splashed on me this afternoon. *****. My closest Apple Store is an hour away. I've tried a bunch of things from this thread. All I can do now is wait and see if it fixes itself.

I was assuming there was another speaker that controlled those sounds, makes sense.  I have tried everything so assume there is either something lodged to tight to get out or its a hardware defect.  Like you, the closest apple store for me is an hour away, but that is where I am heading next week.

    Thanks for the feedback!

arik_s, just try the fix I posted Dec 30,2012, it has worked for me several times on different phones. It is easy and just might save you a trip to Apple &/or some $.

    Peace,

    Countrywench

Well, it's about 24 hours later and I have my sound back. It must have been that tiny bit of water. I guess waiting does pay off. Even if it's a last resort.

Well, I have tried all the suggestions and nothing has worked for me.  A couple times when I tried Countrywench's fix I got sound temporarily, but after a few seconds it went away.  Making the trip to the Apple store tonight.

    hi

Last night I spilled the glass of water next to my bed onto my iPhone 5.  I immediately removed it but some water must have got into the headphone socket - the phone still worked OK but was stuck in 'headphones' mode.

I applied low heat from a hairdryer - no luck, then did a hard reset with no effect.

Searched this forum for further tips and decided to do a restore in the morning - this still didn't help so I did all the socket drying / sucking / blowing techniques, jiggled a headphone jack, used cotton wool on a toothpick, etc.  Nothing helped.

On the way to work I put the phone on the dashboard of the car as it was a sunny day and hoped that more drying out might help - parked while I went into the post office - and when I came out 10 minutes later it was working OK.

Not sure what the exact fix was but thanks for all the advice and tips in this thread !

Soooo funny story: I tried everything on this list serve including putting it in the freezer for 30 seconds...plus 10 hours!  I feel asleep on that sucker and left it in the freezer.  Then spent ALL morning tearing my house apart looking for my phone.  Shameful.

When it dawned on me where my phone was, would you believe that IT STILL WORKS!?  Granted, it's still in headphones mode but at least the phone still works.

I'm going to just deal with this for 2 months until I can get another.  Not sure what caused it. I have had ebay headphones at various times, maybe that caused it.  Now using the apple ones and still doesn't work.  Oh well...

    iPhone4S crippled but going strong

    Hi everyone,

Just wanted to give my 2 cents about  this "headphone mode" problem.

Basically.. my iphone 5 was stuck on headphone mode.. from the day one. Now i tried all the methods.. HAIR DRYING it.. freezing it.. blowing into the headphone jack.. plugging and unplugging the headphone.. 1000 times( not literallly).. even bought compressed air to blow into the headphone jack..  and many moree!! n e ways NOTHING WORKED.

    UNTILLLLL NOWW!! OOhhh yeahhh..

basically i had a laptop clearner set that came with an brush which is anti static one. Well desperate time calls for desperate measures .... so i shoved that brush right in the headjack.. and gave it a brushing all around that area... well its gangnam style from here on end!!

    Hope it helps!

    Ciao

    Toonnnyyy

I drop my iPhone 4 into a fishing pond releasing a fish today. It was only 8 in of water but i quickly pulled it out and everything worked except it was stuck in headset mode.

I fixed it by blowing compress air from a can with a straw that came with it. You can buy it at any store that sells PCs. 4 bucks.

    Worked immediately:)

BTW, i did have a defender case that slowed down the water from going in.

I tried all those ideas, I was freaking out!!!! The only thing that actually worked as crazy as it sounds was the icloud backup, I was getting desperate! Hope it helps.
