You may want to give AppleCare a call at 1 800 275 2273. They can assist in troubleshooting with your new device. I hope youre enjoying the iPhones!(aside from the issues you are having)

First, iMessage and Facetime need to be activated in Settings. Check this support document regarding troubleshooting the activation process http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4268
It also sounds as if you are both sharing the same Apple ID. If that is the case, that can cause a problem as well. These additional support documents might help.

I've waited so long for this phone, and it is absolutely everything I knew it would be. I love it! Thanks for the suggestion.

Great suggestions. No, we have different Apple IDs, so that isn't an issue, fortunately. And both services are turned on, on both phones. However, in checking the settings, I see that the temporary numbers we were assigned while switching our account (we went from a personal to a business account, which the carrier regarded as a new account) are assigned to us. I'll have to get the numbers switched to our real numbers.
Looks like we have some tweaks to work out.
Again, this phone has rocked my world – thank you so much for your suggestions and your willingness to help!

Okay, so if you were porting your old numbers, has that gone through? If you try to call the old numbers, do the phones ring? If so, you will need to turn iMessage and Facetime off. Do a reset on both of the phones, by holding down the on/off and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. After the phone restarts, then go back into Settings and turn iMessage and Facetime back on. After you see they are both activated, see if they are reflecting the correct phone numbers. If they are, then go ahead and try the Facetime connection again.
Good luck and come back if you have any further problems.
