I am no Mainstage expert, but I know that the GIO uses a preconfigured Midi-in to control the transport. It's pre-wrired to play/pause fast forward and back, but can be edited. It's pretty much doable with any MIDI device in which means that if you don't need the extra inputs, you would be much better served by a set of midi footpedals or an array. This would not only be cheaper (due to not having a built in midi interface) but also remove a few points of failure (aggregate devices in OSX, added latency, and less cnhance of MIDI issues as pure MIDI over USB is much simpler than MIDI/Audio).
Something like this: http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Behringer-FCB1010-MIDI-Foot-Controller /2NM?origin=product-ads&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=&utm_campaign= Product+Listing+Ads&utm_content=A18V9BXW_pcrid_29652047599_plid__kword__match__
This would give you much more control as you would have enough buttons to not only fast forward and back and do things like change tempo, but also you could use MIDI Bank Change to switch guitar tone, or use the track select up and down to switch between a bunch of them that could be sitting there prebuilt all at once, and if you wah, that's a wah pedal right at the end for you.
This could really speed up your gigs, no real setup time. Just get there with a template, and EQ your guitar tone till you're happy then you're off.

The GiO will 'pre-configure' with Logic but not necessarily MS.
The GiO switches and buttons are simple MIDI CC switches (including the ones that have "transport" icons on them) which can be mapped to MS parameters as normal.
The OP may also want to take a look at Native Instruments Rig Kontrol as both a MIDI controoler and audio interface.
