Q: No Apple TV Airplay Icon on MacBook Pro Retina

The Airplay funciton works on my iPad3, but not on my MacBook.  The Apple TV is new like the MacBook.  I can turn on Apple TV in iTunes, but I get no Airplay icon in the upper right hand corner of my desktop.  From my MacBook I can play iPhotos on the TV, but I get no mirroring, like I get from my iPad3.  When I go to Systems Preferences, Displays, then there is nothing about Airplay.  I'm new to Apple.  What am I missing?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, Mac OS X (10.7.4), iPad 3

    Hi there

I had this problem today with no icon for airplay on my iphone also I had no airplay icon on my macbook.

I switched off my router and left the power off for about 30 sec to a minute, switched it back on after a reboot everything worked.

    Give it a try

    Hope this helps

    Hello,

I am having this same problem and cannot seem to find the solution anywhere.  Everything has been attempted: Router reset (even though mirroring works fine on my iPhone and iPad 3), Software is up to date on both apple TV 3 and 2012 Macbook Pro, MBP has been rebooted and so has the Apple Tv.  The support link from above is of no help because it suggest that my computer/software is not compatible, but all the prerequisites have been met. Someone please advise.

    Thanks

    Hello CMac1982

Did you manage to find a solution? I have the exact same problem. Can anyone please advise?

    Many thanks

    CMac1982,

I have the same problem, I have a early 2011 macbook pro, with apple tv 2.  Both meet the prerequisites for everything, but I still can't do anything but airplay for itunes.  Mirroring or any images don't work. I've tried everything that I could find, nothing works.  Please post if you find a solution.

Mommy Joe, do you use OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion?  If you still have OS X 10.7.5 it does not support mirror and you would either need to purchase the new OS from the app store or use a third party app such as airparrot.

    Mommy Joe,

I have yet to find a solution. I left this out on my last post. I also have a MacBook 15 that is made in the same month and I have no issues mirroring through my Apple TV. It seems the issue is with my 13 only. I'm still lost.

I HAVE FOUND THE SOLUTION! (well for my problem anyway...)

As julesnewtoMac stated you need to update to the latest version of Mountain Lion - I did this a few minutes after I posted yesterday and once the update had installed it worked fine.

Hope this helps, would have posted sooner but for work etc.

Unfortunately, this does not help my issue. As I stated in my original post. Everything is up to date on an early 2012 MacBook Pro 13" and up to date on the Apple TV 3.

Fair enough. Perhaps give them a call directly if no one is able to provide a solution via the forums. I thought I was indeed running off the latest Mountain Lion (and so, meeting all the above prerequisites) simply because I purchased my Mac after it had been released. Decided to go to the App store and saw there was a later version that I had not yet downloaded. Hope you find a solution.

All versions of Mountain Lion support mirror but too many users update Lion (and it will come up as up-to-date) and think this is Mountain Lion.  It is always worth checking when people post they have the latest update without saying what of!

CMac1982, can you airplay from iTunes but just not mirror?

Same issue, Mac Reinta 15", latest version of Mountain Lion.  Icon never appears in the menu bar, but works in iTunes.
